Puerto Galera Diving Guide: Sites, Seasons & What to Expect

Puerto Galera, on the northern tip of Mindoro, sits right inside the Verde Island Passage - a stretch of water that marine scientists often call the center of the center of marine biodiversity. Translation for divers: more species of fish, coral, and weird little critters packed into one place than almost anywhere else on Earth. Add a two-to-three-hour trip from Manila and you have one of the most accessible world-class dive destinations in the Philippines. Here is what to expect once you get your gear wet.

Why dive Puerto Galera

The big draw is variety. Within a short banca (outrigger boat) ride from Sabang Beach you can do a gentle macro dive hunting for nudibranchs and frogfish in the morning, then drift along a coral wall in current the same afternoon. Visibility usually runs 10 to 30 meters depending on tide and season, and water temperature stays a comfortable 26 to 29 degrees Celsius year-round, so a 3mm wetsuit is plenty for most people.

It also suits every level. Sheltered, shallow reefs are perfect for Open Water students, while the Verde Island drop-off and tide-driven channels give experienced divers something to respect.

Top dive sites

There are over 30 named sites in the area, but these are the ones worth planning your trip around.

• Verde Island Pinnacles - the showpiece. A dramatic underwater wall and pinnacle system roughly a 45-minute boat ride from Sabang, alive with schooling fish, soft corals, and strong current. This is an advanced site; book it on a day with cooperating tides.
• The Canyons - three consecutive bowl-shaped depressions you ride through on a high-current drift, finishing at an old anchor draped in coral. Jacks, snappers, and the occasional turtle. Classic advanced drift dive.
• Sabang Wrecks - a cluster of small sunken boats in shallow water (around 12 to 20 meters) just off the beach. Easy, sheltered, and a macro paradise: frogfish, lionfish, seahorses, and ribbon eels live here. Great for night dives.
• Monkey Beach and Coral Cove - gentle sloping reefs ideal for beginners and check-out dives, with healthy hard coral gardens.
• Hole in the Wall and Sinandigan Wall - a swim-through and a sloping wall famous for nudibranchs. Bring a macro lens.

Macro vs wall diving

Puerto Galera is genuinely split between two styles, and good operators will balance both across your trip.

Macro means slow, shallow, eyes-down diving for tiny creatures - nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, frogfish, harlequin shrimp. The Sabang Wrecks, Sinandigan, and the muck patches between sites are where you will spend hours over a few square meters. Wall and drift diving at Verde Island and the Canyons is the opposite: faster, deeper, and about big-picture seascapes and schooling fish. Best season to dive

The prime window is roughly March to May and again October to early December, when seas are calmest and visibility peaks. The dry season generally runs December to May, so winter and spring are reliable.

Be honest with yourself about the rainy months. From June through October the southwest monsoon (habagat) and typhoon season can bring rough crossings and short-notice ferry cancellations from Batangas. Diving still happens - operators simply pick sheltered sites - but build a buffer day into your plans so a cancelled boat does not eat your whole trip. How to get there from Manila

There is no airport at Puerto Galera, so everyone goes overland-plus-ferry. The route is straightforward:

• From Manila, take a bus or van to Batangas Pier (about 2 to 3 hours; buses from Buendia or Cubao run frequently). Many Sabang dive resorts also offer a door-to-door van transfer.
• At Batangas, board a passenger ferry or bangka to Sabang (the dive village), which takes around 45 minutes to an hour and costs roughly ₱350 to ₱500 plus a small terminal fee. Costs: what to budget

Diving here is excellent value by global standards. Rough, realistic prices:

• Fun dives: around ₱1,400 to ₱2,000 per dive, often cheaper in packages of 5 or 10. Full gear rental adds roughly ₱500 to ₱800 per day.
• Verde Island day trip: typically ₱3,500 to ₱5,000 including two dives, boat, and lunch.
• PADI Open Water course: roughly ₱18,000 to ₱25,000 for the full certification.

Choosing a dive operator

Sabang and nearby Small La Laguna are wall-to-wall with dive shops - that is good for competition but means you should still pick carefully. Look for PADI or SSI affiliation, well-maintained rental gear, small group ratios, and dive guides who actually know the tide tables (crucial for the Canyons and Verde). Final tips before you go

Bring a surface marker buoy and be comfortable with drift diving if you want the signature sites. Carry cash - card facilities in Sabang are patchy.
