Kawasan Falls: Canyoneering Down a Turquoise River in Cebu

Diving & adventure#cebu#canyoneering#waterfalls#adventure#2026

Kawasan Falls is a three-tiered waterfall system on the Matutinao River in Badian, Cebu. The water is a startling turquoise blue, the kind of color that makes people think the photos are edited until they see it in person. But the main reason travelers come here is not just to look at the falls. It is to canyoneer down the river that feeds them. The standard canyoneering route starts in the town of Kanlaob in Alegria and follows the river downstream for about 4 to 5 kilometers through a series of jumps, slides, swims, and short scrambles, ending at the first tier of Kawasan Falls. It is one of the most popular adventure activities in the Philippines and for good reason.

What Is Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls

Canyoneering, also called canyoning, is the activity of traveling through a canyon using a mix of walking, climbing, swimming, and jumping. At Kawasan, the route is downstream, which means you are mostly going with the flow of the river. You do not need technical climbing skills. The challenges are natural water slides formed by smooth rock, jumps from ledges into deep pools, and short swims through narrow gorges. The entire route takes 3 to 5 hours depending on your pace and the water level.

The route passes through a series of small waterfalls and pools, each one slightly different. Some pools are calm and perfect for floating. Others have a current that pushes you toward the next drop. The rock is limestone, which is smooth from thousands of years of water erosion, so the natural slides are genuinely fun and not painful. The final section opens up into the main Kawasan Falls pool, where the water drops from a height of about 15 meters into a wide, deep basin.

How to Get to Kawasan Falls

Kawasan Falls is located in Barangay Matutinao, Badian, on the southwest coast of Cebu Island. The starting point for canyoneering is typically in Barangay Kanlaob, Alegria, which is about 30 minutes further south by road.

If you are coming from Cebu City, the drive to Badian takes about 3 hours by private car or van. By public transport, take a Ceres Bus from the South Bus Terminal in Cebu City heading to Bato via Barili. The fare is around PHP 160 to PHP 200 one way. Tell the conductor you are going to Kawasan Falls or to the canyoneering jump-off point, and they will drop you at the appropriate stop. From the highway, it is a short motorcycle ride (habal-habal) to the registration area, costing about PHP 50 to PHP 100 per person.

Many travelers prefer to join an organized tour that includes round-trip transport from Cebu City or Moalboal. A canyoneering tour from Moalboal, which is the nearest tourist hub, costs PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500 per person including guide fees, entrance fees, helmet, life vest, and lunch. A tour from Cebu City with hotel pickup costs PHP 2,500 to PHP 3,500.

The Canyoneering Route Step by Step

The experience begins at the registration area in Kanlaob. Here you sign a waiver, pay the environmental fee, and get fitted with a helmet and life vest. The fee is PHP 1,500 per person for the canyoneering activity, which includes the guide. If you just want to visit Kawasan Falls without canyoneering, the entrance fee is PHP 200 to PHP 300 per person.

From the registration area, a short downhill hike of about 15 to 20 minutes takes you to the first water entry point. This is where the river begins and where you start getting wet. The first jump is usually a small one, about 2 to 3 meters, to get you used to the idea of jumping into deep water. Your guide will always check the depth and tell you exactly where to jump.

As you move downstream, the jumps get progressively higher. The most famous jump on the route is a ledge about 8 to 10 meters high. You do not have to jump from the highest point. There is always a lower option, and your guide will show you both. If you are not comfortable jumping, some guides can lower you down with a rope or you can take a detour around the jump.

There are also several natural slides. The rock has been worn into smooth channels by the water, and you can sit in them and let the current carry you into the pool below. The longest slide on the route is about 5 meters. It is fast and fun and one of the highlights of the trip.

The final stretch is a swim through a narrow gorge with high limestone walls. The water here is deeper and the current is gentle. After about 20 minutes of swimming and floating, the gorge opens up and you see the main Kawasan Falls. This is where most groups stop for lunch and a rest before the final short walk to the exit.

Safety Considerations

Canyoneering at Kawasan is generally safe, but it is a real outdoor activity with real risks. The most important rule is to always follow your guide. The guides here are experienced and know every jump, every pool depth, and every current. Never jump without your guide checking the water first, and never jump from a spot your guide has not approved.

Wear the life vest at all times. Even if you are a strong swimmer, the vest provides buoyancy in the deeper pools and helps you float through the calmer sections without tiring. The helmet is also mandatory. The canyon has overhanging rock and branches, and a helmet prevents head injuries if you slip or if something falls from above.

Do not canyoneer during or immediately after heavy rain. The water level can rise quickly and the current becomes dangerous. Tour operators monitor the conditions and will cancel trips if the river is too high. If you arrive and the water looks brown or muddy instead of turquoise, that is a sign of recent rain and you should ask your guide if it is safe to proceed.

Wear proper water shoes or sandals with straps. Flip-flops will come off immediately and bare feet will get cut on the rock. Most tour operators rent water shoes for PHP 50 to PHP 100 if you do not have your own.

What to Pack for Canyoneering

Pack light because everything you bring will get wet. The essentials are a swimsuit or rash guard, water shoes with good grip, a dry bag for your phone and money (most guides carry one but it is good to have your own), and sunscreen applied before you start. Leave towels and dry clothes in the vehicle or at the registration area. There are changing rooms and showers at the exit point near Kawasan Falls.

If you want to take photos, a waterproof phone pouch is essential. Many vendors at the registration area sell them for PHP 100 to PHP 200. GoPro cameras are ideal for this activity because they are waterproof and can be mounted on a helmet or chest strap. Some guides offer to take photos and videos of you throughout the trip and send them via Bluetooth or AirDrop at the end, usually for a tip of PHP 100 to PHP 200.

Where to Stay Near Kawasan Falls

The nearest tourist hub is Moalboal, about 45 minutes north of Badian by road. Moalboal is famous for its sardine run and Pescador Island diving, and it has a wide range of accommodations. A dorm bed in Panagsama Beach costs PHP 500 to PHP 800. A double room in a guesthouse runs PHP 1,000 to PHP 2,000. Mid-range resorts with pools start at PHP 2,500. Most canyoneering tours from Moalboal include round-trip transport.

If you want to stay closer to the falls, there are a few guesthouses and campsites in Matutinao and Badian. Camping near the falls costs PHP 200 to PHP 500 per tent. There are also a couple of resorts along the river with rooms starting at PHP 1,500 per night. Staying here means you can wake up to the sound of the falls and start the canyoneering route early before the crowds arrive.

Best Time to Go Canyoneering at Kawasan

The best time is during the dry season from December to May. The water is clearest and most turquoise during this period, and the risk of flash floods is lowest. March and April are the busiest months. If you want to avoid crowds, go on a weekday and start early. Most tour groups begin between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. If you start at 6:30 AM, you will have the first section of the canyon almost to yourself.

The rainy season from June to November does not necessarily mean the activity is cancelled. Light rain is fine and can actually make the experience more dramatic. But heavy rain or a typhoon warning means the river is dangerous and tours will be suspended. Always check the weather forecast and confirm with your tour operator the day before.
