How this guide was built
We read the price and duration of every bookable Siargao trip we index. Two things separate it from every other destination in the inventory.
First, the price floor. Entry is PHP 500 and the median is PHP 1,500. Against a PHP 1,850 floor in Puerto Princesa and a PHP 3,800 median on Mactan, Siargao is the cheapest island we sell.
Second, the durations. Everywhere else the field reads "full day" or "half day". Siargao is the only destination where operators list products in days - a three-day eco surf camp at PHP 1,800 and a two-day surf and yoga camp at PHP 2,500. Nobody sells a multi-day camp on Panglao or in Honda Bay.
The camps are the tell, and they change the maths
A three-day camp at PHP 1,800 works out at PHP 600 a day - less than a single day trip almost anywhere else in the Philippines. Operators only price like that when they expect guests to stay put.
That is the practical argument for five nights rather than two. Siargao is not a place you extract sights from on a schedule; the inventory is built around people who arrive, take a board out most mornings, and fill the afternoons loosely.
Getting there costs a day, so do not buy two
Sayak airport near Del Carmen takes direct flights from Cebu and Manila, and the alternative is a ferry from Surigao City to Dapa. Either way, arrival and departure eat into the trip.
On a three-night visit that is two of your days spent moving. On six nights it is the same two days against four times the island time - which is why the short version of this trip is the expensive one per usable day.
Cloud 9 is a lesson venue, not just a photograph
The boardwalk at Cloud 9 is the image that sells Siargao, and the break itself is a serious reef wave that is no place to learn. What our inventory actually sells there is a PHP 800 two-hour lesson - beginners are taken to sandier, more forgiving breaks nearby.
If you have never surfed, book the lesson early in the trip rather than late. Two hours is enough to find out whether you want the other four mornings on a board, and that decision shapes everything else you plan.
The island tour everyone books, and the one they miss
Tri-island hopping - Naked, Daku and Guyam - runs PHP 1,200 to 1,500 for six to eight hours and is the default day out. Naked Island is a bare sandbar with no shade at all, which matters more than the photographs suggest: bring cover, because there is none to buy there.
The trip fewer people book is the PHP 900 mangrove paddle combined with the Magpupungko rock pools. The pools only work at low tide, so it is one of the few things here that is genuinely tide-dependent - ask the operator which day the tide suits rather than picking a date and hoping.
Sohoton Cove is a Bucas Grande trip, not a Siargao one
The PHP 1,500 Sohoton Cove tour is the longest day in the inventory and it does not happen on Siargao. Bucas Grande is roughly two hours away by boat, and the cove entrance is tide-gated - boats can only pass under the rock arch at certain water levels.
It is a full day committed to travel, so it belongs mid-trip rather than on your last day, when a delayed return puts a flight at risk. The stingless jellyfish lagoons are the reason people go, and they are seasonal rather than guaranteed.
When to go, and the part about typhoons
Siargao sits in the eastern Pacific approach to the Philippines, which is where storms arrive first. Surf season runs roughly August to November, which overlaps with the most active part of the typhoon calendar - the swell and the storms come from the same weather.
March to June is calmer, hotter and easier for beginners, with smaller waves. Check PAGASA bulletins before travelling in the second half of the year, and treat a booked flight to a small island airport as cancellable in a way a Manila flight is not.
What most guides get wrong about Siargao
The first error is treating it as a three-day stop on a Mindanao loop. The inventory prices multi-day camps below per-day rates elsewhere precisely because the island rewards staying; a three-day visit spends two days in transit for one on the island.
The second is describing Cloud 9 as a beginner spot because it is the famous one. It is a reef break, and the operators themselves teach elsewhere - a distinction that travel writing flattens routinely and dangerously.
The third is calling Siargao expensive because it has become fashionable. On our numbers it is the cheapest island we index: entry PHP 500, median PHP 1,500. Accommodation has risen, but the things you actually do there have not.
Getting around once you are there
General Luna is the main base and most accommodation sits along or behind the Cloud 9 stretch. Habal-habal motorbike taxis and rented scooters are the normal way to move, and the island's roads are quiet enough that this is the default rather than an adventurous choice.
Dapa, where the ferry lands, is about forty minutes from General Luna. If you arrive by boat rather than by air, factor that transfer in - it is the difference between arriving in time for an afternoon and arriving for dinner.
