About this tour

What to expect

You set off from General Luna in the morning on a traditional outrigger boat (bangka) and spend the day looping between three of Siargao's most photogenic islets. The classic order is Naked Island first, while the light is soft and the crowds are thin, then Daku for lunch, and Guyam to finish -- though crews adjust the route to the tide and the weather.

Naked Island is exactly what it sounds like: a pure white sandbar with no trees, no shade and nothing built on it, sitting alone in turquoise water. It is the spot for that classic "marooned on a sandbar" photo, so bring a hat and reef-safe sunscreen because there is nowhere to hide from the sun.

Daku Island ("daku" means big in the local Surigaonon tongue) is the largest of the three and the usual lunch stop. There is a small fishing community here with shaded cottages, and your boatmen typically grill the seafood and serve a Filipino spread -- often a "boodle fight" of rice, grilled fish, chicken and fruit laid out on banana leaves. You can swim, walk the long beach, or buy fresh coconuts from local vendors.

Guyam Island is the smallest -- a tiny circle of sand crowned with a cluster of coconut palms and a fringing reef. It is the prettiest for snorkeling and for shade, a calm place to end the day before the boat heads back to General Luna in the late afternoon.

Most operators run this as a shared "joiner" trip (you share the boat with other travelers), with a private-boat upgrade available for groups who want their own schedule. Snorkeling gear is usually available, and the pace is relaxed and family-friendly.

About the area

Siargao: the surfing capital of the Philippines

Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island off the northeast coast of Mindanao, in Surigao del Norte, facing the open Pacific. For most of its history it was a quiet fishing and coconut-farming island -- the interior is still one of the largest mangrove forests in the country. That changed in the early 1990s when surfers discovered the reef break off the General Luna coast and named it Cloud 9; the first Siargao Cup surfing competition in 1996 put the island on the world map and the boardwalk and watchtower (built in 2003) became its icons.

The three islands on this tour -- Naked, Daku and Guyam -- sit just offshore from General Luna, the town that grew into Siargao's tourism hub. Daku is home to a small fishing village, while Naked and Guyam are uninhabited.

Typhoon Odette and the comeback

On 16 December 2021, Super Typhoon Rai -- known locally as Odette -- made its first Philippine landfall directly on Siargao with sustained winds near 195 km/h. General Luna alone took roughly three-quarters of the island's economic damage, around 1.2 billion pesos, and the famous Cloud 9 boardwalk was swept away. The recovery, branded "Bangon Siargao" (Rise, Siargao), has been remarkable: the boardwalk reopened in 2022 and tourist arrivals reached 529,822 in 2023, more than double the pre-pandemic 2019 figure. The Cloud 9 towers are again being renovated to host World Surf League events. The islands you visit on this trip are very much open and thriving.

Frequently asked questions

Which islands does the tour cover?
Three: Naked Island (a bare white sandbar), Daku Island (the largest, where lunch is served at a small fishing village), and Guyam Island (a tiny coconut-palm islet with a snorkeling reef). The order changes with the tide and weather.
How much are the extra fees on top of the tour price?
Budget around PHP 250-300 per person for fees not included in the tour: an LGU tourism fee of about PHP 100 (PHP 80 for seniors/PWD, free for kids 10 and under), plus island environmental fees -- roughly PHP 100 on Daku and PHP 60 on Guyam. Amounts can vary slightly by operator and year.
What is the best time of year to go?
March to October is the dry, calm season with the best water clarity. From November through February the northeast 'amihan' winds and typhoon season can make seas rough; trips are sometimes cancelled or shortened for safety. Check a local forecast and book flexible if you travel then.
Is it suitable for non-swimmers and kids?
Yes. The boat trip is short and calm in good weather, life jackets are provided, and you can stay in shallow water or relax on the beach. It is a popular family day out. Bring sun protection -- Naked Island has zero shade.
Shared joiner tour or private boat -- what's the difference?
The joiner (shared) tour is the cheapest option: you share a boat with other travelers on a set schedule, ideal for solo travelers and couples. A private boat costs more in total but lets your group set your own pace and stay longer at each island.
