Visibility, which is the diving argument for March to May
Coron's wrecks are the reason certified divers come, and underwater visibility is at its best in the calm hot-dry months. Rain and wind stir sediment, and on a wreck at depth that turns a good dive into a murky one.
December to February is dry and reliable too, and it is peak season - fuller boats and higher accommodation prices. March to May trades crowds for heat and generally gives the flattest sea.
The spare day is not optional
When conditions turn, the coastguard suspends sailings and Coron's entire inventory stops simultaneously - island tours, dive boats and the El Nido crossing together.
On a three-day trip a single blown-out day removes a third of the visit and quite possibly the reason you came. On a longer stay it is absorbed. This is the clearest case in the Philippines for building slack into an itinerary.
The El Nido crossing, and why it needs a fallback
Coron and El Nido are separate islands connected by a passenger boat of several hours, weather-dependent and seasonal, or a short flight. In rough months the boat can stop running for days at a time.
If your onward flight out of Puerto Princesa or Manila is fixed, take the flight between the two rather than the boat, or leave a genuine buffer. This is the most common way a Palawan itinerary breaks.
Busuanga airport and small-aircraft weather
Flights land at Busuanga (USU), a small airport 30-45 minutes from Coron town whose runway limits aircraft size. Small aircraft are more weather-sensitive than jets, and there are few same-day alternatives if a flight cancels.
That is worth knowing when planning a tight international connection out of Manila: allow more than you would from a major hub.
Suspended sailings, and what that removes
Typhoon season overlaps the wet months and peaks roughly July to October. A direct hit is not an annual event anywhere specific, but a system passing nearby is enough to suspend boats and ground small aircraft.
Check PAGASA bulletins before travelling in the second half of the year. The practical rule is to keep a spare day around any sea crossing or small-airport flight, because that is where a delay turns into a missed connection.
What does not change with the season
Prices hold across the year. The most common price is PHP 1,850 while the median sits at PHP 3,500 - the gap reflecting the dive products in the upper half of the inventory.
Site entrance fees at Kayangan Lake and other stops are collected on arrival in cash and are separate from tour prices in every month. Mount Tapyas, roughly 700 steps up from town to the best view over the bay, is free year-round and is the one thing no weather cancels outright.

The first error is recommending a three-day Coron trip in the wet season. Without a spare day the itinerary depends on the weather cooperating on exactly the days you booked.
The second is calling Coron the budget Palawan base. Its PHP 3,500 median is above El Nido's PHP 2,500 in every month.
The third is presenting the El Nido boat as a routine transfer. It is a multi-hour open-water crossing that stops in bad conditions.
Kayangan Lake, and what a rough morning costs
Kayangan is reached by boat to Coron Island and then a steep climb over a ridge to the lake. Both halves depend on the crossing running, and the lake itself is often called the cleanest in the country - it is the single image most people arrive for.
Losing that day to weather is the specific disappointment a spare day protects against. Site entrance fees are collected on arrival in cash, separately from the tour price, whatever the month.
Calauit and the land alternatives
Busuanga has a handful of things reachable by road: the Maquinit saltwater hot springs a short tricycle ride from town, and the Calauit safari on the far side of the island, holding imported African animals from a 1970s project.
Neither replaces a boat day, but on a cancelled morning they are the difference between a lost day and a slow one - and Calauit in particular is unlike anything else in the Philippines.
