Mount Apo is the highest mountain in the Philippines at 2,954 metres, straddling Davao del Sur and Cotabato — a dormant active volcano whose vast caldera is surrounded by one of the most biodiverse forests in Southeast Asia. The Apo Natural Park protects the last significant habitat of the Philippine Eagle, plus endemic pitcher plants, moss forests, and a high-altitude crater lake. Three main trails approach the summit: from Kidapawan (via Agko and Lake Venado, most popular), from Davao City (via Caayon), and from Digos (least crowded). The Kidapawan route offers the most organised infrastructure: paved road access to the trailhead, a registered guide association, and the breathtaking Lake Venado (2,650m elevation) as a first-night campsite — one of the most atmospheric mountain lakes in Southeast Asia.

Summit via the Kidapawan trail
The 3-day/2-night standard itinerary — Agko trailhead (1,100m) to Lake Venado campsite (2,650m) to summit (2,954m) to descent. Day 1 is long (6-8 hours) but manageable. The crater rim view on a clear day reveals the immensity of Mindanao's interior. A true life achievement.
Camp at Lake Venado
The high-altitude lake at 2,650m is one of the most beautiful campsites in Southeast Asia. At night, temperatures drop to 5-10C, the lake reflects the stars, and silence is total. Most Apo trekkers cite the lake as equally memorable to the summit.
Spot the Philippine Eagle
Mount Apo is the last major stronghold of the Philippine Eagle — the world's largest eagle — in the Davao region. Expert birdwatching guides with spotting scopes dramatically improve sighting chances. Early morning at forest edge is best.
Soak in Mainit Hot Springs
Natural sulphurous hot springs at the base of the Kidapawan trail. Many trekkers stop here on the return for a muscle-recovery soak. The pools range from 38-45C. A local community manages the site (PHP 50-100 entrance).
Trek through the Apo sulphur vents
The upper reaches have active fumaroles and sulphurous vents — the air smells strongly of sulphur near the crater. The landscape becomes otherworldly: ash-grey soil, stunted vegetation, wisps of volcanic steam against blue sky.

February through May for clearest summit views and lowest risk of rain. November through January is the second window. June through October brings typhoon-influenced rain and poor visibility. The Kidapawan approach is best in the dry season; the Davao route tends to be drier year-round.

How hard is the Mt. Apo trek?
Challenging but achievable for fit, motivated beginners. The Kidapawan trail is rated moderate-to-difficult. Day 1 involves 6-8 hours of hiking on forest trail. Altitude above 2,500m can cause mild headaches and fatigue. Most people aged 18-55 with regular exercise habits complete it successfully with a registered guide.
What permits do I need?
DENR PENR permit (PHP 1,000) + PAMB registration (PHP 200) + mandatory registered guide (PHP 1,500-2,500/day for up to 3 persons, 3 days). Total permit/guide costs PHP 4,000-6,000 per person. Arrange through the Kidapawan City Tourism office at least 3 days ahead.
When is the summit clear of clouds?
February-May has the highest probability of clear summit views. Morning summits (before 9am) have the best odds — clouds build through the afternoon. Even on cloudy days, the forest, Lake Venado, and overall experience are extraordinary.
