About this tour

Standing at 2,954 meters above sea level, Mount Apo is the Philippines' highest mountain and one of the country's most revered natural landmarks. A summit trek of Apo is the ultimate Mindanao adventure — a challenging but deeply rewarding journey through some of the most biodiverse terrain in Southeast Asia. Over two days, you'll hike through lowland rainforest, montane cloud forest draped in moss and orchids, open grasslands, and volcanic ridges dusted with sulfuric crystals, ultimately emerging above the clouds to a summit view that stretches across Mindanao in all directions.

Day one begins at the trailhead in Kidapawan (North Cotabato side) or Magpet — depending on the season and permit availability — with a full day of trekking through dense old-growth forest home to hornbills, Philippine deer, and the critically endangered Philippine Eagle. Camp is set up at designated sites around 2,200m elevation, where guides prepare hot mountain meals over camp stoves and the temperature drops sharply after dark. Stargazing at altitude on a clear Apo night is an experience like no other in the Philippines.

Day two begins before dawn for the final push to the summit, timing the arrival for sunrise when the sky turns gold and the volcanic crater lake below reflects the morning light. The descent is just as dramatic, passing through sulfurous steam vents and geological formations that remind you this is an active geological zone. This trek is not for the unprepared — it requires a base level of fitness and the right gear — but every step is worth it. Apo is the trek that defines the Philippines for serious hikers.
