Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park Tour
About this tour
Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park in Basey, Western Samar, is without question one of the Philippines' most spectacular protected areas — and one of its most criminally undervisited. Recognised as a National Cultural Treasure, the park encompasses a 840-hectare karst landscape of limestone cliffs rising 60 metres straight from the river, ancient sea caves decorated with stalactites and rare cave formations, and the centrepiece: a massive natural stone bridge that spans the Sohoton River in a single 20-metre arch.
Access is exclusively by traditional dugout banca, which adds an atmosphere of genuine exploration to the experience. Your boatman will navigate the narrow, cliff-walled passages of the river system, ducking under hanging vines and manoeuvring through rock arches barely wider than the boat itself. Inside the cave systems — including the famous Panhugyanan (Bat Cave) and the crystal-lined Hikong Uba and Hikong Bato caves — thousands of cave swiftlets roost in the dark vaults overhead, their echolocation creating an eerie clicking chorus in the silence.
The Sohoton Lagoon, reachable by swimming through a semi-submerged cave passage, opens into a circular chamber open to the sky — one of those impossible-to-photograph-adequately places that stays etched in memory forever. Rangers from the national park accompany all tours, sharing deep knowledge of the local ecology, cave biology, and folklore that makes Sohoton feel like a living storybook landscape.
