About this tour

At the southernmost tip of Eastern Samar, Guiuan occupies a singular place in World War II Pacific history. This quiet coastal town was chosen by American forces in late 1944 as the primary staging and supply base for the liberation of the Philippines โ€” over 100,000 troops were based here at the peak of operations, and the airstrips they built in Guiuan and nearby Homonhon Island launched some of the most significant air campaigns of the Pacific War. Today, the concrete runways, aircraft revetments, and military infrastructure from 1944 remain partially visible amid the palm groves, largely untouched and rarely visited.

The full-day tour from Tacloban follows the scenic Eastern Samar coastal highway โ€” a road that winds past dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and fishing villages perched on stilts above the Pacific. In Guiuan itself, the tour visits the magnificent St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church โ€” a Spanish colonial fortress-church built in the 17th century, designated a National Cultural Treasure, and famous for its remarkably intact coral-and-lime construction. WWII site visits include the preserved airstrips, the American Army chapel ruins, and the outdoor memorial to Pacific veterans.

The afternoon features a bangka trip to the nearby beaches of Homonhon Island โ€” historically the site of Magellan's first landing in the Philippines in 1521 โ€” with swimming and snorkelling in the protected coastal waters. The combination of deep history, colonial heritage, WWII archaeology, and pristine Pacific coastline makes the Guiuan day tour one of Eastern Visayas' most rewarding and underappreciated experiences.
