Biri Island Rock Formations Day Tour — Northern Samar
About this tour
On a small island off the northern tip of Samar, the raw power of the Pacific Ocean has spent millennia sculpting one of the most extraordinary geological landscapes in Southeast Asia. Biri Island's rock formations — locally called "the Rocks of Biri" — are a series of massive basalt columns, sea arches, blowholes, and tidal pools carved by Pacific swells into shapes that defy easy description. They are volcanic in origin, wave-formed in character, and utterly unlike the coral and limestone formations that typify Philippine beaches. Standing among them, especially when Pacific swells crash through the narrow channels and blast upward through blowholes in explosions of white water, is an experience of staggering natural power.
The formations are spread across the island's northern and western shoreline and are accessible via a combination of trekking on foot and island-hopping by bangka. Six main formation areas are named and visited in sequence: Magasang (the largest arch), Biri (the namesake column cluster), Cabugao, Olao-Olao, Cagbolo, and Magtaon. Each has its own distinct character — some are best at high tide when waves crash through arches, others at low tide when tidal pools reveal starfish, sea urchins, and trapped reef fish. A sunrise visit to Magasang, when early light turns the black basalt copper and gold, is one of Philippine photography's great experiences.
Biri is reached by ferry from Allen port in Northern Samar — a 20-minute crossing that itself offers views back to the mainland mountains. The island's fishing village is friendly, unhurried, and almost entirely free of the commercial tourism that has overtaken more famous Philippine beach destinations. Visit soon — Biri's combination of geological drama and unspoiled authenticity is a rare thing.
