Balangiga Bells Historical Tour — Eastern Samar
About this tour
Few objects in Philippine history carry as much weight as the three Balangiga Bells. On September 28, 1901, Filipino guerrillas launched a surprise attack on the American garrison of Balangiga, Eastern Samar — the bloodiest single engagement for American forces in the Philippine-American War. In retaliation, General Jacob Smith ordered the province scorched and its people killed above the age of ten, in what became known as one of the darkest chapters of American colonial history. The soldiers took two of the town's church bells as war trophies, keeping them for 117 years — one at an American air base in Wyoming, one in South Korea — before they were finally returned to Balangiga in December 2018 following years of Philippine diplomatic pressure.
Today, the Balangiga Bells hang restored in the redbrick Balangiga Parish Church, a powerfully simple setting that makes their presence all the more moving. The church itself was rebuilt after the 1901 events and still shows the architectural bones of the original Spanish colonial structure. A small but thoughtfully curated municipal museum documents the events of 1901 in careful detail — the ambush, the retaliation, the decades of resistance, and the long campaign for the bells' return — with photographs, documents, and artefacts that bring this history into sharp focus.
The journey to Balangiga takes you through the spectacular coastline of Eastern Samar, passing through coconut groves and fishing villages that have changed little in a century. This tour is for travellers who want to understand the Philippines not just as a destination but as a country with a deep, complex, and ultimately triumphant history.
