Things to do in Davao City

Philippine Eagle Center

This is the non-negotiable first stop in Davao. The center in Malagos, 36 km from downtown, is the breeding and conservation home of the Philippine Eagle — the national bird, one of the world's largest and rarest raptors. Entrance is PHP 50 (Filipino) or PHP 200 (foreign), open 8 AM to 4 PM daily. Book a guided tour at the gate for an extra PHP 100. The birds are enormous up close — 90 cm tall with a wingspan over 2 meters.

Island Garden City of Samal

From Santa Ana Wharf the ferry to Samal Island takes exactly five minutes and costs PHP 20, making this one of the most accessible island escapes in the Philippines. Pay the PHP 100 island entrance fee at the dock, then hire a tricycle (PHP 50–80) to reach Paradise Island Park or Kaputian Beach. Divers should ask at Coral Garden Dive Resort about wreck and reef sites — visibility regularly hits 20 meters.

Eden Nature Park

Perched at 1,000 meters above sea level in the hills of Toril, 30 km from downtown, Eden is the most complete eco-park in Mindanao. The PHP 250 entrance fee gets you into manicured gardens, a pine forest trail, a small farm, and strawberry picking in season. The ziplines run 630 meters at altitude (PHP 350–700). The drive up on a clear morning, when Davao Gulf appears below you through the pines, is itself worth the trip.

Malagos Garden Resort and Chocolate Farm

Malagos is on the road to the Philippine Eagle Center — combine both in a single day-trip. The chocolate tasting session (PHP 150) includes four varieties and a cup of pure tablea hot chocolate that will ruin supermarket chocolate for you permanently. Malagos cacao is exported to European craft chocolate brands — the terroir is that good.

Davao Durian Night Stalls

No visit to Davao is complete without sitting on a plastic stool at a fruit stall near Roxas Avenue at 9 PM eating durian so ripe it drips. A kilo of Puyat durian runs PHP 80–150. Get marang and pomelo alongside it — the stallholders will crack open each fruit and let you taste before you commit.

Crocodile Park and Davao Museum

The Davao Crocodile Park on J.P. Laurel Avenue (PHP 300 entrance) houses Philippine crocodiles, a snake house, and a small zoo with native Mindanao wildlife. Afterward, the Davao Museum of History and Ethnography (PHP 30) covers Bagobo, Mandaya, and Manobo tribal culture with traditional weapons, woven cloth, and oral history recordings.

🗓️ Best time to visit Davao City

December through May is the sweet spot. Unlike most of the Philippines, Davao sits outside the main typhoon belt — the Davao Gulf and the mountains to the east provide natural shelter. For the Philippine Eagle Center and Samal Island beach days, aim for January to March when skies are clearest.

✈️ How to get to Davao City

Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) is 13 km north of the city center. Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and AirAsia fly DVO from Manila (1 hr 40 min, PHP 1,500–3,500 return if booked 3–6 weeks ahead). From CDO by bus the journey is 5–6 hours via the Sayre Highway (PHP 350–600). For Samal Island, take a jeepney or Grab to Santa Ana Wharf and board the ferry (PHP 20, 5 minutes, boats run roughly every 15 minutes from 6 AM to 10 PM).

Frequently asked questions — Davao City

Is Davao City safe for tourists?

Yes — Davao consistently ranks as one of the safest cities in the Philippines by crime rate. The city's reputation for strict law enforcement has shaped a disciplined public culture. Exercise normal urban caution with your belongings, avoid poorly-lit streets after midnight, and you will have no issues.

Can I buy durian and bring it home on the plane?

Fresh durian is not allowed in aircraft cabins due to the smell. However, frozen durian packs (vacuum-sealed, no smell) are available at pasalubong shops and can be checked as baggage. Durian candies, pastillas, and chocolate travel well without refrigeration.

How long should I spend in Davao?

Three full days is the minimum: one day for the Philippine Eagle Center and Malagos, one day for Samal Island, and one day for Eden Nature Park plus the city itself. A fourth day could be devoted to a day trip to Mount Apo trailhead or a longer Samal Island dive session.

Do I need a guide for Mount Apo from Davao?

Yes. Mount Apo — the highest peak in the Philippines at 2,954 m — requires a registered guide, a permit (PHP 1,500–2,000 from DENR), and a minimum two-day itinerary. The main trailhead via Kidapawan is 3 hours from Davao City. Arrange through a reputable Davao trekking agency (PHP 2,500–4,000 per person all-in).

First time in Davao City?

Quick essentials so you can hit the ground running.

🛂
Visa

Citizens of most countries get 30 days visa-free on arrival in the Philippines; extendable to 59 days at the Bureau of Immigration (Davao office is on Claro M. Recto Avenue).

💱
Currency

BDO, BPI, Metrobank, and Landbank ATMs are all over the city center and in Abreeza Mall and SM Davao. Money changers along Ilustre Avenue offer competitive USD/EUR exchange rates.

🏥
Health

No special vaccinations required. Davao tap water is not for drinking — buy bottled water (PHP 15–25 for 1.5L). Sun protection is essential for Samal Island days.

💳
Money & payments

Budget travelers can manage on PHP 800–1,200/day. Mid-range comfort runs PHP 2,500–4,000/day. A Samal Island overnight plus Eden Nature Park and the Eagle Center: plan PHP 5,000–7,000 for a solid two-day itinerary inclusive of accommodation.

🔒
Safety

Davao is safe. Western Mindanao (Marawi, parts of Basilan and Sulu) is a different matter and completely separate from Davao — separated by hundreds of kilometers and a fundamentally different security environment. Check your government's travel advisory but do not conflate Davao with conflict zones that are geographically and politically distant.
