Negros Occidental is the sugar province of the Visayas -- vast sugarcane plantations, colonial haciendas and the Bacolod's MassKara Festival (October). Sipalay's Sugar Beach is the province's most beautiful coastal area. The Mambukal Mountain Resort near Bacolod has sulphur hot springs, jungle trails and a butterfly sanctuary.

Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.
Best time to visit
March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
