Bacolod wears its identity on its face — literally. The smiling masks of MassKara Festival, worn by thousands of street dancers every October, tell the story of a city that chose joy as an act of defiance when crisis hit. Born in 1980 during a devastating period of economic collapse and maritime tragedy, the festival was a collective decision to smile anyway, and that spirit has soaked into the city's bones ever since. Beyond the festival, Bacolod is the undisputed capital of chicken inasal — grilled chicken marinated in annatto oil, citrus, and lemongrass that you eat with unlimited garlic rice and dip in fried chicken oil — an experience that sounds simple until you taste it and understand why Bacolodenos are fiercely proud of it.

Things to do in Bacolod City

Eat Inasal at Manokan Country

This is not optional. Manokan Country, a covered strip of competing inasal stalls inside the Reclamation Area commercial zone, is the most important food destination in Bacolod. Order a quarter or half chicken (PHP 80–150), unlimited garlic rice (included), and ask for the dip: fried chicken oil mixed with vinegar and chilli. The protocol matters — scoop the chicken oil over your rice, shred the chicken with your hands, eat fast while it's hot. Go to Aida's, Arlene's, or Bilao — all are excellent and the arguments about which is best are part of the experience.

Visit The Ruins at Sunset

Ten kilometres north of Bacolod in Talisay City, The Ruins is the skeletal coral-and-limestone shell of a grand Italianate mansion built by sugar baron Don Mariano Lacson in the early 1900s for his Portuguese wife. During World War II, the family ordered it burned to prevent Japanese forces from using it as a garrison — the thick walls survived and now stand as magnificent arched ruins illuminated golden-orange at sunset, surrounded by manicured gardens. Entrance: PHP 100 adults. The evening lighting (after 6 PM) is the best time to visit.

Explore the Negros Museum

Set in the restored Provincial Capitol building, the Negros Museum tells the story of Negros Island from pre-colonial times through the sugar hacienda era to the present — one of the most thoughtfully curated provincial museums in the Philippines. The hacienda section is particularly striking: the wealth and the labour conditions of the sugar industry are presented without flinching. Entrance: PHP 50 adults. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 AM–5 PM.

Join MassKara Festival Street Dancing (October)

If your trip falls in October, do not miss the street dancing competition on the third Sunday of the month — the most spectacular free event in the Visayas. Thousands of costumed performers in feathered, glittering MassKara masks fill the streets around the capitol for hours of choreographed dancing to live drumlines and brass bands. Stake out a spot on the bleachers early (free) or pay PHP 200–500 for a reserved seat on a higher viewing stand.

Day Trip to Campuestohan Highland Resort

An hour's drive east of Bacolod (PHP 200–350 by hired van or Grab), Campuestohan sits 1,200 metres above sea level in the mountains of Murcia and offers a genuinely surreal experience: a highland theme park with European-style castle architecture, a cool misty climate, zip lines (PHP 300–500), and sweeping views of the Negros lowlands. Entrance: PHP 200 adults. Budget a full day.

Try the Bacolod Food Trail Beyond Inasal

Bacolod's food scene extends well beyond Manokan Country. Try napoleones (a local flaky pastry filled with sweet custard cream, PHP 15–25 each). Bob's Cafe on Lacson Street serves kansi (a sour-spicy beef bone marrow soup, the local answer to bulalo, PHP 200–280 per bowl). For dessert, walk to Felicia's for sans rival (the Filipino cashew meringue butter cake that Bacolod does better than anywhere else, PHP 400–600 for a slice-box to take home).

Frequently asked questions — Bacolod City

When exactly is MassKara Festival and how far in advance should I book?

The main street dancing competition is always on the third Sunday of October, but festival events run throughout the entire month of October. For the street dancing weekend itself, book your hotel 2–3 months in advance — Bacolod hotels fill completely, and prices double. For all other times of year, same-week bookings are fine.

How far is Bacolod from Iloilo and can I do both in one trip?

Absolutely, and this is one of the best Visayas combinations. Bacolod and Iloilo are linked by fast ferry (Weesam Express or Ocean Jet) across the Guimaras Strait — 1 hour, PHP 250–350 one way, with departures roughly every 2 hours from the Bacolod port terminal. Fly into one city and out of the other to avoid backtracking.

Is Bacolod expensive compared to other Philippine cities?

Bacolod is very reasonably priced. A meal of full chicken inasal with unlimited rice at Manokan Country costs PHP 150–200. A comfortable mid-range hotel in the city centre runs PHP 1,500–2,500/night. A full day trip to The Ruins and Campuestohan including transport costs PHP 600–900 per person. Budget travellers can live well on PHP 1,500–2,000/day.

Are there good day trips from Bacolod to nature destinations?

Yes. Aside from Campuestohan, the most popular is Mambukal Mountain Resort (1 hour south of Bacolod, PHP 50 entrance), a hot spring and waterfall resort at the foot of Mt. Kanlaon — seven waterfalls, a butterfly sanctuary, and the option to start a Mt. Kanlaon volcano trek. The town of Silay City (30 minutes north, PHP 30 by jeepney) has 30 ancestral heritage houses from the sugar baron era.
