Cauayan in Negros Occidental is the nearest town to Danjugan Island Marine Reserve -- a pristine private island run by the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation with overnight camping and snorkeling in five lagoons. Sipalay's Sugar Beach is 10 minutes further south. A worthwhile stop on the Negros circuit between Bacolod and the south.

Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.

March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
