How this guide was built
The sea fares come from our own transfers table, which lists Batangas-Coron at approximately eight hours and PHP 1,500-2,200 - the longest and dearest ferry route we index, against Batangas-El Nido at five hours and PHP 1,200-1,800.
That difference is the useful part: the two Palawan gateways are not interchangeable by sea, and Coron is the more expensive one to reach that way.
Busuanga airport, not Coron airport
Flights land at Francisco B. Reyes airport (USU) on Busuanga Island, roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road from Coron town. Shared vans meet arrivals and are the normal way in.
The airport is small and the runway limits aircraft size, which means fewer flights and more weather sensitivity than a major hub. If your onward international connection from Manila is tight, that is worth knowing - a cancelled Busuanga flight has few alternatives the same day.
Coron town is the base, and Coron Island is not
A naming detail that confuses people constantly: Coron town is on Busuanga Island. Coron Island is a separate island south of it, and it is the one in the photographs - Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, the limestone cliffs.
You sleep in Coron town and visit Coron Island by boat as a day trip. Nobody stays on Coron Island; it is largely an ancestral domain of the Tagbanua people with restricted access.
The eight-hour ferry from Manila
Batangas Port to Coron runs at about eight hours for PHP 1,500-2,200, with 2GO operating regional services. Batangas is itself a couple of hours from Manila by road, so this is a full day of travelling.
Against a one-hour flight it is hard to justify on time, and the saving is modest once the Manila-Batangas leg is counted. It earns its place if you are moving with dive gear or a lot of luggage, or if flights are full in peak season.
Coron to El Nido is a sea crossing
This is the single most useful thing on this page. Coron and El Nido are both "Palawan", and travellers routinely assume a road connects them. None does - they are separate islands.
The link is a passenger boat of several hours, weather-dependent and seasonal, or a short flight. In rough months the boat can stop running for days at a time, so an itinerary that depends on a specific crossing date should have a fallback.
Plan the two as separate bases with a travel day between them, not as a morning transfer.
Getting around once you are there
Coron town is small and walkable. Tricycles cover everything else, including the port where the island-hopping boats leave from.
Almost everything you came for is a boat trip: the lakes, the wrecks, the hot springs on Busuanga. Book the boat day through an operator in town rather than assuming you can reach the sights independently - most of them have no land access at all.

Booking the El Nido crossing
The passenger boat between Coron and El Nido runs on a schedule that thins out in the low season and stops entirely in bad weather. Book it in advance in peak months, and check the day before regardless.
There is also an expedition option: multi-day boats that take several days between the two, sleeping on beaches along the way. That is a holiday in itself rather than a transfer, and it appears in our own tour inventory as a multi-day product rather than a transport listing.
The flight between the two is short and removes the weather risk, at a price. If you have a fixed international departure out of Manila at the end of the trip, the flight is the safer choice for the last leg.
What the airport transfer actually involves
Shared vans meet arriving flights at Busuanga and run to Coron town for a fixed per-person fare. They wait until they fill, so the 30-45 minute drive can start later than you would like after a small flight.
If your accommodation is outside Coron town - several resorts sit along the coast or on nearby islands - the transfer is longer and often involves a boat leg as well. Confirm this with the property before you arrive rather than assuming a tricycle will cover it.
Weather, and why it matters more here
Almost everything in Coron happens on a boat: the lakes, the wrecks, the reefs, the hot springs. That makes the whole destination weather-dependent in a way an inland one is not.
In rough conditions the coastguard suspends sailings, and when that happens it affects the island tours and the El Nido crossing at the same time. Building a Coron itinerary with no spare day is the mistake; a single blown-out day removes the reason you came.
