The bus, and where to get off
Buses to Badian leave from the South Bus Terminal in Cebu City, the same terminal that serves Moalboal and the southern coast. They run frequently and both air-conditioned and ordinary services cover the route.
Tell the conductor you are going to Badian or to Kawasan - the stop is on the highway rather than at the falls, and a habal-habal or tricycle covers the last stretch to the trailhead or to your accommodation.
The bridges, again
Mactan-Cebu International is on Mactan island, not in Cebu City, and the two bridges into the mainland back up in the morning and evening rush. Landing at 18:00 and hoping to reach the South Terminal quickly is how an arrival day gets eaten.
If your flight lands in the evening, sleep in the city or on Mactan and take a morning bus. Trying to reach Badian the same night rarely works.
Where to sleep, and why one night is enough
Badian town has modest accommodation aimed at canyoneering guests, and there are resorts along the coast west of town facing the Tanon Strait. Neither is a destination hotel.
The value of a night here is the morning start. Arrive in the afternoon, descend the gorge the next morning, then move on - Moalboal is 30 minutes north and has restaurants, dive shops and the sardine run.
Arriving from the south or from Negros
If you are coming from Moalboal it is a 30-minute ride south. From Oslob it is roughly two hours across the island.
From Negros, ferries from Dumaguete cross to Bato or Liloan in southern Cebu, which puts you closer to Badian than Cebu City does. For anyone already island-hopping, that route avoids the city and its bridges entirely.
What to bring for the transfer itself
Cash, because local fees at the gorge are collected on site and the bus does not take cards. Shoes that stay on your feet in water - flip-flops are refused by every reputable operator, and buying replacements in Badian is not straightforward.
A dry bag if you have one. You will be swimming with your group rather than leaving belongings on a bank, and the shops here are aimed at locals rather than at outfitting visitors.
What most guides get wrong about getting to Badian
The first error is presenting Kawasan as a comfortable Cebu City day trip. Our own inventory prices that version at fourteen hours.
The second is omitting the airport-to-terminal leg. It is the least predictable part of the journey and adds 45 minutes or more.
The third is treating Badian as a place to stay for several nights. It is a one-activity town; the second night belongs in Moalboal.
Habal-habal, and the last stretch
The bus drops you on the highway rather than at the falls or at most accommodation. Habal-habal motorbike taxis wait at the junction and cover the last few kilometres for a small fare.
Agree the price before you get on, as everywhere in the Philippines. If you are carrying a large pack, say so - the ride is short but the roads down to the coast are steep in places.
Booking the canyoneering before you arrive
Operators collect from accommodation in Badian and Moalboal, which is the simplest arrangement and removes the need to reach the trailhead independently.
Book the upstream start rather than the short walk-in if you want the full descent - the price gap is small and the experience is different. Confirm the pickup point the evening before, because the two villages are 30 minutes apart and mix-ups happen.
Timing the arrival so the morning works
Canyoneering groups leave early, so an afternoon arrival the day before is what buys you a proper start. Landing at Mactan in the morning, crossing the bridges and taking a midday bus puts you in Badian by late afternoon comfortably.
Trying to compress all of that into the same day as the descent is what produces the fourteen-hour version, and it is the difference between enjoying the gorge and enduring the travel.
Onward from Badian
Moalboal is 30 minutes north and is where most people go next - dive shops, restaurants, and the sardine run 20 metres offshore. Oslob is roughly two hours south-east across the island for the whale sharks.

Eating and supplies before the descent
Badian is a small town with modest shops aimed at residents rather than at outfitting visitors. Buy anything specific - reef shoes, a dry bag, sunscreen - in Cebu City before you come.
Most canyoneering packages include lunch, and the ones priced at PHP 3,200 generally do. Confirm when you book rather than assuming, because the cheaper PHP 1,500 five-hour version often does not.
Whether to book transport or improvise
The bus-and-tricycle chain is cheap, frequent and entirely workable without booking anything in advance - which is how most independent travellers do it.
A private transfer from Cebu City costs several times more and buys door-to-door timing, which matters if you are arriving on a late flight or travelling with a group and heavy bags. For two people on a morning bus, improvising is genuinely simpler.
