Aklan Province: All 9 Bookable Trips Are Boracay, and That Tells You Something

We are reporting an absence as well as a presence, so it is worth being precise about what that means. It shows what is bookable through us, not what exists. Kalibo has the Ati-Atihan festival every January and the mainland has river and mangrove areas; none of it appears in our inventory, which is a statement about the packaged-tour market rather than about the province.

The province is commercially a single island

Aklan covers a large stretch of northern Panay, but every bookable product sits on a 10 km² island off its northwestern tip. Nothing is sold for Kalibo city, nothing for Caticlan beyond the port function, nothing for the interior.

That concentration is worth knowing before you plan. If you land at Kalibo expecting to spend a couple of days in the province before crossing to Boracay, the packaged options do not exist - you will be arranging transport and guides yourself.

What the two airports actually mean

Caticlan is 45 minutes from Kalibo and is the port for the ten-minute boat to Boracay. Caticlan's own airport is closer but takes smaller aircraft and pricier fares; Kalibo takes bigger planes and is the budget route, at the cost of a 90-minute land transfer.

That trade-off is the single most useful piece of Aklan planning, and it is a booking decision made before you arrive rather than a tour you buy afterwards.

The price ladder is short and legible

Nine products, no price repeated more than once, and the ladder reads cleanly: under PHP 1,000 buys the land tour or a helmet dive, PHP 1,500 to 1,850 buys the classic sunset sail or the standard island day, and PHP 3,700 to 4,613 buys motorised or adventure activities - jetski, banana boat, ATV and zipline.

Compare that with our Boracay index of 49 products, where sixteen sit on PHP 1,850 alone. The provincial listing is a thin slice of the same market, so treat the Boracay index as the real picture and this one as what happens to be filed under the province.

Ati-Atihan is the gap in the data

The most distinctive thing in Aklan is not in our inventory at all. Ati-Atihan in Kalibo, every January, is among the oldest and most energetic street festivals in the Philippines - the ancestor of Sinulog and Dinagyang.

It does not appear here because festival attendance is not a packaged product: you go to Kalibo, you find a room months ahead, and you join the street. That absence is itself the practical advice - if Ati-Atihan is why you are coming, book accommodation early and expect to organise the rest yourself.

What nine products means against forty-nine

Our Boracay index holds 49 bookable products; the Aklan provincial listing holds nine, all of them Boracay. The two sets overlap rather than complement each other, and the difference is purely how a product happens to be filed.

That matters when comparing prices. The Aklan median of PHP 1,850 and the Boracay median of PHP 1,850 agree, which is reassuring - but the Aklan set has no price repeated even twice, while Boracay has sixteen products sitting on that one number. A nine-item sample cannot show a price cluster even when one exists.

The mainland gap, and what it implies

Aklan mainland has genuine attractions - Kalibo mangrove areas, the Bakhawan eco-park, river and inland routes - and none of them appear in our bookable inventory.

Absence in a tour catalogue is usually about the market rather than the place. Packaged day tours exist where there is enough steady demand to fill a van daily, and demand in Aklan concentrates on the island. So the mainland is not unvisitable; it is unpackaged, which means hiring a tricycle or van locally and going.

For most travellers that is a reason to stay on Boracay. For anyone who deliberately wants the quieter half of the province, it means budgeting a day and organising it on the ground rather than online.

What most guides get wrong about Aklan

Most guides treat Aklan and Boracay as synonyms. Our data shows why that happens commercially - every bookable trip is on the island - but it leaves travellers unaware that the province has a mainland, a major festival and a second airport with a meaningfully different cost profile.

The second omission is Boracay's rehabilitation framework. The island closed for six months in 2018 and the rules that followed - beach setbacks, a ban on beachfront parties and single-use plastics, capacity management - are still in force. Guides written from pre-2018 material describe an island that no longer exists.

Third, the two-airport question is routinely reduced to a single instruction: fly to Caticlan. For many travellers Kalibo plus a transfer is materially cheaper, and the 90 minutes is the price of that.
