Dumaguete, the "City of Gentle People," is a laid-back seaside capital of Negros Oriental that moves at the unhurried pace of a university town - home to Silliman University (1901), the palm-lined Rizal Boulevard, and an easygoing cafe and street-food culture. It is also the launch pad for some of the country's best underwater experiences: snorkeling with sea turtles at Apo Island, muck and reef diving along the black-sand coast of Dauin, and a short fast-craft ride to the mystical island of Siquijor.

Rizal Boulevard & tempurahan
The seaside promenade becomes a buzzing open-air food strip after sunset - Filipino tempura, fish balls, skewers, kwek-kwek. Snacks ~P5-30 each; a feast ~P100-200. Free to wander.
Silliman University
The oldest American-founded university in Asia (1901): acacia avenues, the wooden Silliman Hall and an Anthropology Museum (~P50-100) with folk artifacts from Negros and Siquijor.
Casaroro Falls
A dramatic 30 m cascade near Valencia down ~350 steps and a short river trail. Entrance ~P50-100; habal-habal round-trip ~P300-500.
Twin Lakes & Apo Island day trip
Two serene crater lakes in mountain rainforest (~P100-150 + kayak), or a boat day to Apo Island to snorkel with green sea turtles (~P1,500-3,000 pp with gear).

Dumaguete has a relatively dry, even climate with no pronounced typhoon season. Best is December to May - sunniest skies and calmest seas for Apo crossings and diving, with peak clarity around March to June. June-November brings afternoon showers but rarely washes out a trip.
✈️ How to get to Dumaguete
Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (DGT), ~15 min north, has daily direct flights from Manila (~1h20) and Cebu (~40 min); tricycle to town ~P150-250. Budget option: fly to Cebu, bus to Liloan/Santander, short ferry to Sibulan. Fast craft to Siquijor (~45-60 min) and Tagbilaran/Bohol leave from Dumaguete port.

Is Dumaguete worth visiting, or just a transit hub?
Well worth it in its own right - the walkable city, seaside boulevard, street-food scene, university culture, waterfalls and mountain lakes justify two to four days, beyond its role as a gateway to Apo and Siquijor.
How many days should I spend in Dumaguete?
At least three: one for the city and Rizal Boulevard, one for the Valencia waterfalls and Twin Lakes, and one for an Apo Island day trip. Divers and those adding Siquijor should budget five to seven days.
Can I see sea turtles at Apo Island?
Yes - Apo is famous for resident green sea turtles, and snorkelers regularly swim alongside them in the shallow, clear sanctuary water. Sightings are very common on calm-sea days in the dry season.
Is Dumaguete a good place to learn to dive?
Excellent - the Dauin coast and Apo Island offer calm conditions, professional PADI centers and incredible marine life at lower prices than many dive hubs. A full Open Water course is ~P18,000-25,000.
