Are box jellyfish a real risk when swimming in the Philippines?
Heard scary stories and want to know which months and areas to be careful.

Real but low-probability if you're sensible. Box jellies and the tiny Irukandji turn up more in calm, warm water, often after rain, especially near mangroves, bays and at dusk or dawn. Most resort beaches are fine. If stung: douse with vinegar for at least 30 seconds (don't rub or rinse with fresh water), pull off tentacles, then seek help. Many island sari-sari stores sell vinegar cheaply. Ask the boatmen, they always know if blooms are around.

Got a mild sting off Bohol once, more annoying than dangerous. A rash-guard or thin long-sleeve when snorkelling helps a lot and doubles as sun protection. I now just keep a small vinegar bottle in my dry bag.
