Tinuy-an Falls — The Philippines Niagara
About this tour
Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig, Surigao del Sur, is a waterfall on a scale that most visitors simply cannot comprehend until they are standing in front of it. Stretching nearly 95 meters across in three magnificent tiers of cascading water, Tinuy-an is the widest waterfall in the Philippines and one of the most spectacular in all of Southeast Asia. It has earned the nickname 'Philippine Niagara' — and while Niagara Falls is wider, Tinuy-an's setting in a jungle-clad gorge framed by ancient dipterocarp trees gives it a raw natural drama that Niagara, surrounded by tourist infrastructure, simply cannot match.
The approach to Tinuy-an is an experience in itself — a drive through the old-growth Bislig forest, one of the last remaining stands of primary lowland dipterocarp rainforest in Mindanao, before the sound of the falls becomes audible through the trees and grows steadily louder until the full multi-tiered cascade appears through the forest wall. The lower tier creates a wide, misty pool where swimming is both possible and exhilarating — bamboo rafts are available to pole out toward the main curtain of water for a drenching, thunderous close encounter with the falls.
Tinuy-an is a worthy half-day to full-day excursion from the Surigao del Sur coast or from Davao via Hinatuan. Combined with the Enchanted River at nearby Hinatuan — just 1.5 hours away — it forms part of what is widely regarded as one of the best natural attraction combinations in the Philippines. The sheer scale, the pristine jungle setting, and the accessible swimming make Tinuy-an a must-visit on any Mindanao itinerary.
