Camalig Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave Adventure
About this tour
Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave in Camalig, Albay, is one of the Philippines' most impressive limestone caverns — a labyrinthine system of chambers and passages stretching over 800 metres into the mountain, filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and the sound of an underground river rushing through the darkness. The name means "blowing-blowing" in Bicolano — named for the powerful cold air that flows through the cave's natural ventilation passages, dropping the temperature inside to a refreshing 18-22°C even on the hottest Albay day.
The cave is archaeologically significant: pre-colonial burial jars (burnay pots) containing human remains were discovered here in the 1960s and are preserved in situ, giving the cave a haunting historical atmosphere. The guided tour takes you through three major chambers — the Cathedral Hall (a vast open cavern with a natural skylight), the Underground River passage (where you wade through ankle-deep water to reach the innermost sanctum), and the Crystal Hall (a smaller chamber dense with calcite formations).
The tour is also often combined with a visit to Calabidongan Cave, a second cavern system just 2km away with a different geological character and connection to an above-ground river. Headlamps, safety helmets, and an experienced cave guide are mandatory and included. Suitable for all fitness levels — the standard tour avoids the narrow crawl sections.
