Mayon Volcano ATV Lava Tour — Legazpi, Albay
About this tour
Mayon Volcano is the Philippines' most iconic natural landmark — a near-perfect cone rising 2,462 metres above the Albay Gulf, active and alive. The ATV Lava Tour brings you closer to its base than any guided hike, crossing the dark volcanic wasteland left by Mayon's last major eruption in 2018. The hardened lava fields are an alien landscape of twisted black rock, still steaming in places, with the perfect cone towering above you against a backdrop of blue sky.
All-terrain vehicles handle the rough lava terrain easily — no off-road experience needed. Your guide leads the convoy through designated lava routes, pausing at viewpoints where the perspective of Mayon's summit changes dramatically with every kilometre. The Cagsawa Ruins are often visible from the lava field — three-hundred-year-old church towers poking through the solidified lava, swallowed by Mayon's 1814 eruption that buried the town of Cagsawa and killed over 1,200 people.
The ATV tour departs from Legazpi City and covers approximately 15 kilometres of lava terrain across the 3-hour experience. Helmets, goggles, and a safety briefing are included. Experienced riders can request a longer route into the restricted zone (with guide supervision). Sunrise departures give the best light for photographs of Mayon's perfect cone.
