Cagsawa Ruins & Mayon Volcano Day Trip
About this tour
The Cagsawa Ruins are the Philippines' most photographed historical site — the surviving bell tower of a 17th-century Franciscan church rising from a field of solidified lava, with the perfect cone of Mayon Volcano framed directly behind it. The 1814 eruption buried the entire town of Cagsawa under metres of volcanic debris; over 1,200 people who had taken refuge inside the church died as the lava reached the doors. Today the ruins are a UNESCO-nominated heritage site and one of Bicol's most emotionally powerful places.
The half-day tour includes a guided walk around the ruins with historical context, followed by a visit to the Cagsawa Eco-Park where you can rent a bamboo bike to cycle around the lava field, take bangka (boat) rides on the rice paddies, and enjoy panoramic Mayon views from a viewpoint tower. The tour continues to Legazpi City Centre and the lively Albay market where you can buy pili nut products, chilli-based Bicol specialties, and fresh tropical fruit, followed by a Bicol cuisine lunch at a local restaurant (pinangat, laing, and Bicol Express on the menu).
This is the essential introduction to Albay — culturally rich, historically significant, and photographically spectacular.

About the area
Cagsawa is located in Daraga town, about 10 kilometres from Legazpi City centre. The church was built by Franciscan missionaries in 1724 on the site of an earlier church. Mayon has erupted 9 times since the Cagsawa burial; the ruins serve as both a memorial and a constant reminder of the volcano's power and proximity.
