Puerto Princesa

Gateway to Palawan & a UNESCO underground river · Palawan

Puerto Princesa is where most Palawan adventures begin, and it deserves a day or two of its own. The capital wraps a relaxed, famously safe city around one of the planet's natural wonders: the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site you explore by paddle boat through a vast limestone cave. Add Honda Bay island hopping, firefly-lit mangrove rivers, and a genuinely great food scene, and the gateway city becomes a destination in its own right.

Things to do in Puerto Princesa

Underground River (Sabang)

Paddle into an 8.2 km navigable river inside a cathedral-like limestone cave - a UNESCO site and New 7 Wonders of Nature. Permits are capped daily, so book ahead. Full-day joiner tour ~PHP 1,500-2,500 incl. van, boat, permit and lunch.

Honda Bay island hopping

Hop between Cowrie, Luli and Starfish islands for white sand, shallow reefs and easy snorkeling. Joiner tours ~PHP 1,200-1,800 incl. boat, fees, gear and lunch.

Iwahig firefly watching

At dusk, drift down the mangrove-lined Iwahig River while thousands of fireflies twinkle in the trees. ~PHP 700-1,200 per person, often with a stargazing add-on.

Eat the city

Puerto Princesa is a foodie city: grilled tamilok, fresh tuna and lato seaweed, chaolong beef noodle soup, and crocodile sisig. A great meal runs PHP 200-500.

Frequently asked questions — Puerto Princesa

Do I need to book the Underground River in advance?

Yes. Daily visitor permits are capped to protect the cave and sell out in peak season. Book a few days ahead through a tour operator or PANA.PH - they handle the permit, van transfer and boat.

How many days should I spend in Puerto Princesa?

Two to three days: one for the Underground River, one for Honda Bay, and time for the food scene and Iwahig fireflies. Many travelers then continue to El Nido or Port Barton.

Is it worth stopping, or should I go straight to El Nido?

Worth a stop. The Underground River, Honda Bay and the firefly tour are unique to this area, and the city is clean, safe and full of great food - a relaxed contrast to busier El Nido.

How do I get from Puerto Princesa to El Nido?

Shared van (5-6 hrs, ~PHP 700-900) from San Jose Terminal, with private vans and door-to-door options too. Book the day before, especially in high season.
