Kalibo is Aklan's provincial capital and the main reason many travelers pay less to reach Boracay. KLO airport handles more international and budget charter flights than tiny MPH in Caticlan, which makes it the preferred entry for Koreans, Chinese, and budget-conscious domestic flyers. The 1.5-hour van ride to the Caticlan jetty is the trade-off — and during the third week of January, Kalibo itself becomes the destination for Ati-Atihan, one of the oldest and loudest festivals in the Philippines.

Ati-Atihan Festival
Held every third week of January, this Mardi Gras-style Catholic-indigenous festival fills the streets with soot-painted dancers in elaborate Ati tribal costumes, street bands, and 48-hour nonstop drum rhythms. Book accommodation 3 months in advance — hotels sell out fast.
St. John the Baptist Parish Church
The town's colonial-era stone church faces the plaza and dates to 1581. The facade is simple but the interior is ornate — worth 20 minutes before catching your van to Caticlan.
Kalibo Night Market
Open from 6 PM along Martyrs Street, the night market is the best place to eat cheap in Kalibo. Grilled isaw, fresh lumpia, and halo-halo stalls run until midnight.
Van to Caticlan
Shared vans depart from the KLO airport road and from Kalibo's Ceres terminal on Roxas Avenue. The ride takes 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic near the Caticlan bridge. Book a window seat for the rice paddy and mangrove views.
Aklan Weaving
The region is famous for pina cloth — woven from pineapple fibers. A few small shops near the public market sell authentic scarves and table runners. They make good gifts and are far lighter than Boracay pasalubong.
Overnight in Kalibo
Eurotel Kalibo and Hotel del Rio are the most reliable mid-range options near the town center. Staying one night lets you do Ati-Atihan properly or catch a pre-dawn flight without stressing about van timing.

January is Ati-Atihan season — the festival peaks on the third Sunday of the month and the city is completely transformed. For a quieter visit on the way to Boracay, November to May is ideal; the rainy Habagat season brings afternoon downpours but Kalibo is still passable.

Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and PAL fly Manila–Kalibo (KLO) daily — fares are often PHP 500–1,500 cheaper than Caticlan routes. From KLO arrivals, shared vans to Caticlan Jetty Port depart from the airport road (PHP 200, 1.5–2 hrs); private transfers run PHP 1,200–1,800.

If you save PHP 1,000 or more, yes. The extra 1.5 hours by van is manageable. If you land after 7 PM, stick to Caticlan flights; late vans are unreliable and the jetty closes at 10 PM.
When exactly is Ati-Atihan Festival?
The climax is the third Sunday of January each year. The full celebration runs for about a week beforehand, with the biggest street parade and ritual on the final Sunday morning.
How do I get from Kalibo Airport to the Boracay ferry?
Walk out of arrivals and look for the shared van marshals on the airport road — they load when full and charge PHP 200. Journey is 1.5–2 hours to Caticlan Jetty. Private cars cost PHP 1,200–1,800 and can be pre-booked through your hotel.
Are there good restaurants in Kalibo?
