When I can't escape for a full island trip, La Union (Elyu) is my go-to. It's a 4-5 hour drive or bus from Manila and the surf at San Juan is perfect for learning, roughly October to March.
The beach-town scene is great — surf in the morning, flat whites and tacos in the afternoon, bonfires at night. A cheap, easy reset without flying anywhere.
