Mactan

Cebu's resort island - beaches, diving & the airport in one · Cebu

Mactan is the easiest tropical landing in the Philippines: step off your plane at Mactan-Cebu International Airport and you are already on the island. Within 15-30 minutes you can be at a beach resort, or motoring out on a banca toward turquoise sandbars. This narrow coral island, joined to Cebu City by two bridges, is built for travelers - resorts line the eastern shore, dive shops cluster near the reefs, and it is where chieftain Lapu-Lapu defeated Magellan in the 1521 Battle of Mactan.

Frequently asked questions — Mactan

Is Mactan the same as Cebu?

Not quite. Mactan is a separate island off Cebu's east coast (home to Lapu-Lapu City and the airport), connected to mainland Cebu by two bridges.

Should I stay in Mactan or Cebu City?

Mactan for beaches, resorts, diving and airport access; Cebu City for history, food and south-Cebu trips. Many do both.

How much does island hopping cost?

A joined group tour with lunch, gear and fees is ~PHP 1,500-3,000 pp; private charters more. Confirm what is included.

Is the water good right off the beach?

Resorts have lovely beachfronts but the shoreline can be shallow with seagrass; the clearest water and coral are a short boat ride away at the sanctuaries and sandbars.
