Calapan City is the capital of Oriental Mindoro — the first major island south of Manila accessible by RORO ferry from Batangas pier (2.5 hours). While Puerto Galera (1 hour north of Calapan by van) captures the international diving crowd, Calapan itself is an understated city serving as the hub for Oriental Mindoro's most extraordinary experiences: Mount Halcon (2,586m), universally rated the most technically challenging trek in the Philippines by experienced mountaineers; Naujan Lake — the largest lake on a non-Luzon island, a protected sanctuary for over 100 waterbird species; and the Mangyan indigenous peoples of eight distinct sub-groups, whose traditional baybayin-script textiles are among the finest traditional craft objects in Southeast Asia. Trek Mt. Halcon (2,586m)
Universally acknowledged as the Philippines' most technically demanding mountain — rated Class 5 out of 5 difficulty. The standard route involves multiple river crossings through the Mangyan Buhid ancestral domain, river-ravine navigation, and 5-7 days of continuous rainforest trekking. DENR permit and NCIP community protocols required. A serious mountaineering achievement for the Philippines.
Naujan Lake bird sanctuary
The Philippines' largest lake on any island outside Luzon covers 8,225 hectares in a protected freshwater ecosystem. Over 100 waterbird species including the critically threatened Spotted Greenshank (wintering), Philippine Duck, and various herons. Motorboat tours from Naujan town (20km from Calapan) PHP 800-1,500 for the boat.
Mangyan textiles and weaving village
Oriental Mindoro's Hanunuo and Buhid Mangyan communities produce extraordinary traditional textiles — intricate geometric patterns incorporating baybayin (pre-colonial Philippine script) into the weave. Some cooperatives welcome visitors, and buying directly from weavers provides critical income. Arrange through the NCIP (National Commission on Indigenous Peoples) office in Calapan.

The inter-island ferry landing area hosts a vibrant early-morning market: fresh Mindoro catch, vegetables from highland Mangyan farms, and general goods. Market days (Wednesday, Saturday) also have Mangyan craft vendors — weavings, baskets, and jewelry at better prices than Calapan souvenir shops.
Bulalacao white sand beaches (south Mindoro)
The municipality of Bulalacao at the far south of Oriental Mindoro has undeveloped white sand beaches facing the Sulu Sea — 4 hours from Calapan by bus. Almost zero tourist infrastructure, offshore islands accessible by banca, and a genuinely untouched Philippine beach experience.

How do I get to Calapan from Manila?
DLTb or other bus companies run from Manila (Buendia or EDSA) to Batangas pier (2-3 hours). Ferry from Batangas to Calapan (2.5 hours). Total Manila-Calapan journey: 5-6 hours. Ferries (Starlite and Montenegro Lines) run multiple times daily but schedules vary — book ahead for peak periods (Holy Week, summer).
What's the Mangyan connection to Puerto Galera?
Puerto Galera and Calapan are both in Oriental Mindoro, but they attract different visitors. Puerto Galera is the established dive resort; Calapan is the provincial capital with practical services, Mangyan culture access, and Halcon/Naujan connections.
