Surigao del Sur sits on Mindanao's Pacific coast with the kind of natural wealth that travel writers reach for superlatives to describe — and then find that the superlatives are literally accurate. Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig is genuinely called the Niagara of the Philippines not as marketing exaggeration but because the tiered curtain of water is 55 metres wide and drops 180 metres in a solid wall of white at peak flow. An hour north at San Agustin, the Britania Island Group lines up 24 forested limestone islets in turquoise water so clear you can see the coral from the surface. Then there is the Hinatuan Enchanted River, whose spring-fed waters are a shade of luminous deep cobalt-blue that no photograph fully captures. Three of Mindanao's most photogenic natural phenomena, one province.
Things to do in Surigao del Sur
Stand Before Tinuy-an Falls
Drive or ride a habal-habal from Bislig City to the Tinuy-an Falls park entrance (PHP 50 entrance fee), walk 10 minutes down a shaded path, and let the scale of the falls recalibrate your sense of what a waterfall can be. The main cascade — 55 metres wide, 180 metres high in multiple tiers — puts up a permanent mist that keeps the surrounding forest perpetually wet and green. Bamboo rafts available to ride to the base of the falls (PHP 100–150 per ride).
Island-Hop the Britania Group
Based in San Agustin town, rent a banca for the Britania Island circuit (PHP 1,200–2,000 per boat for up to 6 people, full-day). The standard tour covers 5–6 of the 24 islets: Big Britania, Small Britania, Hunongan Cove, and the surrounding snorkeling sites. Water visibility is excellent on calm days and the coral cover is largely intact. Entrance to the Britania Island Group: PHP 50 per person.
Swim the Hinatuan Enchanted River
The Enchanted River in Hinatuan is a 100-metre spring-fed channel whose depth (estimated 80+ metres) produces a shade of blue-green that looks digitally altered in photographs and genuinely surreal in person. Swimming is allowed from 9 AM to noon (entrance PHP 100); at noon the daily fish feeding happens and swimmers must exit. Arrive early (9 AM when it opens) to get the best light and fewest crowds before the tour groups arrive around 10 AM.
Trek to Aliwagwag Falls in Cateel
Roughly 2 hours north of Bislig, Aliwagwag Falls in the town of Cateel is a tiered cascade of 84 steps totalling over 300 metres in height, the longest multi-tiered waterfall in the Philippines. The trek through rainforest to reach the upper tiers takes 30–60 minutes depending on fitness. Entrance: PHP 50. A local guide is recommended (PHP 200–300). Combine with Tinuy-an on a two-day Bislig base itinerary.
Kayak the Lianga Bay Mangroves
The bay at Lianga, between Bislig and Hinatuan, opens into a sheltered mangrove delta navigable by kayak or shallow-draft banca. Community-based ecotourism boats depart from Lianga proper (PHP 400–600 for a 2-hour tour). The mangroves shelter migratory shorebirds, mud crabs, and the occasional Philippine sea eagle.
Overnight in Bislig City for the Full Experience
Bislig City has several decent guesthouses (PHP 600–1,200/night) and two solid local restaurants serving fresh Pacific seafood at PHP 150–300 per dish. Basing yourself here for two nights gives you Tinuy-an Falls in the morning light (before the day-trippers from Davao arrive around 10 AM), an afternoon for Aliwagwag, and the option of a dawn banca out to Bislig Bay for sunrise over the Pacific.

🗓️ Best time to visit Surigao del Sur
October to May is the general dry season and the prime window for travel. Tinuy-an Falls is most dramatic from June to November when rain keeps the water volume at maximum. For Britania Islands and Hinatuan Enchanted River, October to May gives calm seas, better snorkeling visibility, and reliable banca operations. July–September sees the heaviest rain and roughest Pacific swells.

Frequently asked questions — Surigao del Sur
Can I visit Tinuy-an Falls and Britania Islands in the same trip?
Yes and this is the natural itinerary — base yourself in Bislig for Tinuy-an and Aliwagwag (2 nights), then travel north along the coast highway to San Agustin for Britania Islands (2 nights), then continue to Hinatuan for the Enchanted River before returning to Davao or flying from Surigao City. The whole circuit from Davao takes 5–7 days.
Is Mindanao safe for tourists visiting these areas?
Surigao del Sur's nature destinations (Bislig, San Agustin, Hinatuan, Lianga) are regularly visited by domestic and foreign tourists and are not areas of active conflict. Check your government's travel advisory for the Philippines and note which specific provinces are flagged — Surigao del Sur is not among the high-risk listings for most source countries.
What is the best way to get around once I am in the province?
Van-for-hire (PHP 2,500–4,000/day for a private van with driver) is the most efficient option for covering multiple sites across the province's long coastline. Shared vans between major towns run regularly and cost PHP 80–200 per leg. Habal-habal motorcycles handle the last-mile connections from national highway junctions to falls and river entrances.
Are the falls and islands accessible for non-swimmers?
Yes, with caveats. Tinuy-an Falls is fully enjoyable without swimming — the viewing platform and bamboo raft experience do not require swimming. Britania Islands have beaches where non-swimmers can wade and enjoy the scenery from the boat. The Enchanted River swimming area is shallow enough near the edges for non-swimmers.
