Narra is a municipality in southern Palawan, 2 hours by van from Puerto Princesa, controlling some of Palawan's most significant but least-visited attractions. The Tabon Cave Complex on Lipuun Point — a UNESCO Tentative World Heritage Site — is where Philippine pre-history begins: the Tabon Man skull and associated artifacts, discovered in 1962 by Robert Fox, date back 22,000-47,000 years and represent the oldest human remains found in the Philippine archipelago. The sea caves at Lipuun Point are a UNESCO-protected archaeological landscape still being excavated. Beyond archaeology: the Estrella Falls (three tiers, 45 metres, barely visited), pristine beaches around Panalingaan and Aramaywan, and the Bat Cave at Lipuun Point where millions of bats emerge at dusk. The landscape transitions here from El Nido's dramatic karst to Balabac's southern coral world — Narra sits in the productive middle, almost entirely off the tourist trail.

Things to do in Narra

Tabon Cave Complex archaeological site

The sea cave system at Lipuun Point is one of the Philippines' most important pre-history sites. Guided tours through the main accessible chambers include the excavation context and paleolithic tools display. The National Museum manages the site. Boat PHP 800-1,200 from Quezon port; guide included.

Bat Cave at Lipuun Point (dusk)

The limestone headland at Lipuun Point also houses a massive bat colony — millions of fruit bats and insectivorous bats emerge at sunset in a streaming, spiralling column that can last 30-45 minutes. Spectacular natural phenomenon. Combine with the Tabon Cave day trip (arrive by afternoon for the cave, stay for the bats).

Trek to Estrella Falls

A 3-tier waterfall in the Narra interior — 45-minute habal-habal from the town, then a 30-minute forest trek. The main drop is approximately 45 metres into a swimming hole. Virtually no tourists. Guide available from the Narra Tourism Office (PHP 200-300).

Panalingaan Island beaches

The beaches in the Panalingaan barangay area are wide, white-sand, and completely undeveloped. Charter a banca from the Narra pier for a half-day: PHP 1,500-2,500. The surrounding waters have excellent snorkelling on undisturbed coral.

Drive the southern Palawan coast road

The National Highway from Puerto Princesa through Aborlan and Narra toward Quezon passes through some of Palawan's most spectacular limestone scenery — karst hills, rice-field valleys, and occasional ocean views. The road itself is the attraction, and the pace of life in the roadside villages is a world apart from El Nido resort zone.

Frequently asked questions — Narra

Can I see the actual Tabon Man skull?

The original skull and key artifacts are displayed at the National Museum of the Philippines in Manila. The Tabon Cave complex is the archaeological site and context — the cave walk and interpretation are meaningful even without the artifact. A display on-site replicates the major finds.

How do I arrange the Tabon Cave boat?

At Quezon port (near Narra) — arrange at the municipal tourism office (8am-5pm) or at the boat operator association at the pier. Boats depart when the sea is calm (most days October-May). Budget PHP 800-1,500 for the full boat (capacity 6-8 people) plus guide.

Is Narra just a side trip from Puerto Princesa?

Most visitors treat it as such (2-hour van ride). But 2 nights in Narra itself allows combining Tabon Cave + bat cave + Estrella Falls + Panalingaan Island in a relaxed itinerary. Basic guesthouses exist in Quezon and Narra towns (PHP 500-900/night).
