Malapascua is a speck of an island off the northern tip of Cebu, barely 2.5 km long and ringed with powder-white sand. But divers come for one thing: the thresher sharks of Monad Shoal - the only place on the planet where you can reliably encounter pelagic thresher sharks daily. Before sunrise, these elegant sharks with absurdly long scythe-like tails rise from the deep to visit cleaning stations on the reef. Beyond the threshers there is Gato Island's caves and sea snakes, mellow Bounty Beach, and the photogenic Kalanggaman sandbar day trip.

Things to do in Malapascua

Thresher shark dive (Monad Shoal)

The bucket-list dive. Boats leave ~4:30-5am to reach the shoal at first light; you wait behind a rope at ~16-25 m as the sharks emerge. ~PHP 2,500-3,500 per dive plus a sanctuary fee. Advanced Open Water recommended.

Gato Island dive

A protected sanctuary ~45 min away - a swim-through tunnel, white-tip reef sharks, banded sea snakes, frogfish and seahorses. ~PHP 3,000-4,000 per dive (often a 2-3 dive day).

Kalanggaman Island day trip

A flawless ribbon-thin white sandbar off Leyte, ~1-1.5 hrs by boat, plus a small island fee. One of the most photogenic spots in the Philippines. ~PHP 1,500-2,500 pp joining a group.

Bounty Beach & island stroll

The island's main white-sand beach lined with dive shops and bars, with gorgeous sunsets; walk to the small lighthouse and quiet northern beaches.

🗓️ Best time to visit Malapascua

October to May (dry season) brings calmer seas, better visibility and reliable boats. Threshers are seen year-round, but flat morning seas make the dawn dives far more comfortable. June to early October is wetter and rougher, with lower prices and crowds.

✈️ How to get to Malapascua

From the Cebu North Bus Terminal, take a Ceres bus or shared van to Maya port (~4-5 hrs, ~PHP 200-250), then a bangka (~30 min, ~PHP 100-200) to the island. Leave Cebu City early - the last public boats from Maya stop in the late afternoon. ~5-6 hrs door to door.

Frequently asked questions — Malapascua

Are thresher sharks really seen daily?

Monad Shoal is the only known site with reliable, near-daily thresher sightings thanks to the cleaning stations they visit each morning. Sighting rates are remarkably high on calm dawn dives.

Do I need to be a certified diver?

Yes for the threshers - it is a deep dive (~16-25 m) in low light, so at least Open Water, with Advanced Open Water strongly recommended. Non-divers can enjoy snorkeling, Bounty Beach and Kalanggaman.

How do I get there from Cebu City?

Ceres bus or van to Maya port (~4-5 hrs), then a bangka (~30 min) to the island. Leave early to catch a public boat before they stop.

Is there an ATM on the island?

Bring plenty of cash. The couple of small ATMs often run out or go offline. Most dive shops and guesthouses prefer cash.
