Maasin is the compact, tidy capital of Southern Leyte Province — a city that punches above its size. The Cathedral of Saint Francis Xavier, built in 1876, is a fine example of earthquake baroque architecture and the spiritual anchor of the province. The surrounding waters are the real reason divers make the journey: Southern Leyte's Sogod Bay (covered in the Southern Leyte guide) is shared with Padre Burgos to the north, but Maasin gives a different angle — the weekly whale and dolphin watching trips out of the city pier, and the accessible thresher shark dive site at Napantao Marine Sanctuary just 8 kilometres away, where pelagic thresher sharks — unmistakable with their scythe-like tails — can be seen at the cleaning station nearly every morning. Anahaw Island just offshore has white sand beaches and snorkelling suitable for all levels.

Dive with thresher sharks at Napantao
The Napantao Marine Sanctuary (8km from Maasin) has a cleaning station where pelagic thresher sharks arrive at dawn. Dive operators based in Padre Burgos also run trips here. Thresher sharks are large, shy, and harmless — their long tail is unmistakable.
Whale and dolphin watching in Sogod Bay
Year-round whale and dolphin trips depart from Maasin pier — Bryde's whales, spinner dolphins, and occasionally blue whales are spotted. Trips PHP 1,500–2,500/person, 3–5 hours on the water.
Visit Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral
The 1876 earthquake baroque cathedral is the finest colonial church in Southern Leyte. The stone facade, bell tower, and interior devotional statues are all well-preserved. Sunday mass draws the entire province.
Island-hop to Anahaw Island
A 20-minute boat ride from the city reaches this small island with a white sand beach and clear, calm water excellent for snorkelling. Cottage rental and food available on weekends. Weekday visits are almost deserted.
Explore Cambaro Cave and Falls
A scenic habal-habal ride into the interior of Southern Leyte reaches Cambaro — a limestone cave and adjacent waterfall system used as a local swimming spot. Basic but beautiful and virtually unvisited by foreigners.

October–June for whale shark and whale/dolphin watching in Sogod Bay. February–June for the clearest water and calmest diving conditions. Thresher sharks at Napantao are present year-round. July–September has heavy seas from southwest monsoon — boat trips may be cancelled. The Cathedral is worth visiting any day.

From Tacloban: bus via Bato Ferry crossing PHP 200–300, 3–4 hours. From Ormoc: van via the trans-Leyte highway PHP 250–300, 3 hours. From Cebu City: RORO ferry to Maasin pier — 6 hours overnight, PHP 300–500 (multiple operators including Starlite). Ferries from Bato to Ubay (Bohol) and to Cebu also operate from the Maasin area.

Are thresher shark dives suitable for beginners?
