Ligao is a city in the heart of Albay, tucked between the dramatic cone of Mayon Volcano and the Bicol mountains, just 25 kilometres south of Legazpi City. While Legazpi gets the Instagram crowds and the ATV tours, Ligao remains refreshingly low-key — a place where the local market spills onto the street, Mayon still dominates the skyline from every direction, and Pantao Falls tumbles 25 metres into a swimming pool surrounded by banyan trees and farmland. The city's heritage architecture is notable: San Sebastian Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Albay, with an ornate baroque facade that survived multiple Mayon eruptions. The city also borders the Ligao Eco-Park and the start of the Sierra Madre southern extension, making it an underappreciated base for exploring the Bicol region without the Legazpi congestion.

Things to do in Ligao

Swim at Pantao Falls

The star attraction — a 25-metre cascade in a forested ravine with a deep natural pool. The setting is lush, the water is cold and clear, and on weekdays you may have it nearly to yourself. Entrance PHP 30. Best visited in the morning before weekend crowds.

Photograph Mayon from Ligao

Mayon's southern flank as seen from Ligao is less photographed than the Legazpi angle — and arguably more dramatic. The volcano rises directly from flat farmland in all directions; find an elevated spot at dawn for the clearest views.

Visit San Sebastian Cathedral

Built in 1578 and reconstructed multiple times after volcanic destruction, the cathedral has a striking baroque facade and an interior that carries the weight of four centuries of Bicol Catholic history.

Explore the Ligao Eco-Park

A municipal nature park on the slopes of the mountains south of the city, with hanging bridges, forest trails, and a native tree nursery. Good for a morning walk and birdwatching (hornbills and swiftlets are common).

Day trip to Buhi Lake

An hour south of Ligao lies Lake Buhi in Camarines Sur — famous for Sinarapan, the world's smallest commercially harvested fish. The lake shore has simple restaurants serving Sinarapan dishes and a quiet, pastoral atmosphere.

🗓️ Best time to visit Ligao

December–May for dry, clear skies and the best Mayon views. January–March is the clearest and the volcano is usually fully visible. June–November brings typhoons — Albay sits in one of the Philippines' most typhoon-prone corridors. When Mayon is restless (eruption advisories are issued by Phivolcs), some approach zones are restricted.

Frequently asked questions — Ligao

Is Ligao better than Legazpi for Mayon visits?

Different, not better. Legazpi has more tourism infrastructure and the famous Embarcadero ATV tours. Ligao has more authenticity, less congestion, and equally good Mayon views. Combine both — Legazpi for sunrise ATV, Ligao for the falls and the cathedral — they are 30 minutes apart.

What is the Phivolcs alert level for Mayon, and does it affect visiting?

Phivolcs issues alert levels 1–5 for Mayon based on volcanic activity. Levels 1–2 still allow tourism in most areas. Always check the current advisory at phivolcs.dost.gov.ph before planning an approach. Ligao is outside the main danger zone even at moderate alert levels.

How cold is the water at Pantao Falls?

Very cold — mountain spring water, typically 18–22°C. Refreshing on a hot Bicol day but jarring if you walk in slowly. Jump.
