Legazpi is the capital of Albay province and the main gateway to the Bicol region, dominated at every angle by Mayon Volcano — a near-perfect 2,462-metre stratovolcano that has erupted 51 times and is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines. The city is compact and easy to navigate, with a growing cafe scene, superb Bicolano food, and a range of volcano-facing activities that make it a comfortable 2–3 day base for the whole region.
Things to do in Legazpi
Ride an ATV through the lava fields
All-terrain vehicle tours weave across hardened lava flows at the base of Mayon, with the volcano looming directly ahead. Tours run 30–60 minutes and cost PHP 700–1,500 depending on route and operator — best done early morning before the summit clouds over.
Visit Cagsawa Ruins at sunrise
The half-buried bell tower of the 18th-century Franciscan church, with Mayon perfectly framed behind it, is the most photographed image in the Philippines. Entrance is PHP 30. Arrive before 7 AM to beat the tour groups and get the clearest mountain view.
Kayak Sumlang Lake
A shallow volcanic crater lake 10 minutes from the city, famous for mirror-flat reflections of Mayon at sunrise. Bamboo raft and kayak rentals are available for PHP 100–200, and entrance is free. Bring coffee and go early.
Hike Ligñon Hill at golden hour
A short 10-minute climb to a hilltop nature park with ziplines (PHP 150) and an open view deck facing Mayon directly west — the best spot in the city for late-afternoon light on the volcano.
Eat Bicol Express at the source
The original Bicol Express is a pork-and-coconut-cream stew made with as much chilli as the cook feels like using. Try it at Waway Restaurant (an Albay institution) or any turo-turo in the public market for PHP 60–80 a serving.
Day trip to Donsol for whale sharks
Legazpi is the most practical base for a Donsol whale shark day. Vans depart early morning (around 5 AM) and take 2 hours; the fare is PHP 150 per person by shared van, or PHP 1,500–1,800 for a private hire.

Frequently asked questions — Legazpi
Can I hike Mayon Volcano to the crater?
The summit trail is permanently closed since the 2018 eruption raised the danger zone to 6 km from the crater. ATV tours, lava field walks with a guide, and viewpoints on the lower slopes are the current alternatives.
How close is Cagsawa Ruins to the airport?
About 15 km, or 25–30 minutes by tricycle (PHP 150–200) or rideshare. It is a straightforward stop when arriving or departing.
Is the food really that spicy?
Bicolano cuisine uses fresh bird's eye chillies and is genuinely among the spiciest regional food in the Philippines. Ask for "konting anghang lang" (a little spicy only) if you need to pace yourself. Most restaurants can tone it down on request.
How do I get from Legazpi to Naga?
Vans and buses run frequently between Legazpi and Naga (2–2.5 hours, PHP 100–150). The terminal is near the Legazpi City Hall. Departures run from early morning until early evening.
