Hinatuan Enchanted River
The river whose colour looks like a lie — and is not · Surigao del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines

The Hinatuan Enchanted River is 100 metres long, roughly 20 metres wide, and coloured a shade of deep cobalt blue so saturated that first-time visitors genuinely stop and look twice, convinced the photographs they have seen were edited. They were not. The colour is real and the explanation is physical: the river is fed by a primary spring that descends to an estimated depth of 80 metres through fractured limestone, and the water filling it is not fresh river water but seawater, connected underground to the open sea through a network of subterranean channels. At depth, water absorbs the longer red wavelengths of sunlight and reflects the shorter blue wavelengths — the deeper and clearer the water, the more intense the blue. Swimming is permitted from 9 AM to noon. At exactly 12 PM every day, the caretaker feeds the river fish — a ritual that has produced an extraordinary daily spectacle, with hundreds of large jack, snapper, milkfish, and sea bass rising to the surface in a thrashing, gleaming mass for 15 to 20 minutes. Plan your visit to be in or beside the water when the feeding begins.
Things to do in Hinatuan Enchanted River
Swimming in the Enchanted River (9 AM to Noon)
The swimming window is strictly enforced: 9 AM to 12 PM only, after which the fish feeding begins and swimming is suspended. The river is roughly 1.5 metres deep at the swimming area near the mouth and drops off sharply toward the main spring vent. The water is cold (around 22–24 degrees Celsius, noticeably refreshing in Mindanao's heat) and clear to the bottom — you can see the limestone formations below and the fish circling between you and the blue void of the deep spring. Life jackets are available at the entrance at no extra charge and are required for children and non-swimmers. Arrive before 9:30 AM on weekends and holidays to claim a spot.
The Noon Fish Feeding (12 PM sharp)
This is the single most unexpected highlight of the Enchanted River visit and the reason you should plan your entire day around arriving before noon. At exactly 12 PM, the assigned caretaker begins scattering fish feed into the water. Within two to three minutes, the river's resident fish — hundreds of large silver jack, red snapper, milkfish, and bass — rise from the depths and fill the surface in a churning, glittering mass. The feeding lasts 15–20 minutes and is one of those genuinely strange natural-human spectacles that is impossible to describe accurately. Position yourself on the wooden bridge or on the bank directly opposite the feeding point for the best view.
Britania Islands Boat Tour (Combination Day)
The Britania Island Group, a cluster of about 24 small islands off the coast of San Agustin municipality in Surigao del Sur, is 45 minutes by van from Hinatuan. A combined Hinatuan-plus-Britania day trip is the standard itinerary for visitors coming from Surigao City: swim at Hinatuan in the morning, catch the noon feeding, then drive south to Britania for an afternoon island-hopping boat tour (PHP 1,500–2,500 per boat charter, split between the group). A van charter from Surigao City for the full circuit costs PHP 4,000–6,000.
Tinuy-an Falls Day Extension
If you are based in Tandag or Surigao del Sur for a multi-day trip, Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City — the Niagara of the Philippines — is 2.5 hours from Hinatuan by van and can anchor a second day's itinerary. Tinuy-an is a multi-tiered curtain waterfall 55 metres wide and 45 metres high, the broadest waterfall in the Philippines, set in a forest with a swimming hole at the base. Entrance is PHP 50.
Sunrise at the River Mouth
The river empties into a small cove that opens to the sea, and at sunrise the light hits the water at an angle that intensifies the blue colour toward turquoise. Arrive by 6–7 AM if you are staying overnight nearby (basic guesthouses and homestays at PHP 400–800 per night) to have the river entirely to yourself before the day-trippers arrive at 9 AM. The early light is also the best time for photography.
Snorkeling the River Channel Near the Mouth
The transition zone where the spring-fed river channel meets the sea at the cove is a short snorkel from the swimming area, and the density of fish here — drawn by the daily feeding and the freshwater-saltwater mixing zone — is exceptional. Bring your own snorkeling gear (nothing is rented at the Enchanted River entrance). The current near the mouth can be noticeable depending on tidal state; swim with the current, not against it.

🗓️ Best time to visit Hinatuan Enchanted River
October through May is the dry season in Surigao del Sur and the most reliable window. November through February brings the clearest skies and the best natural light for the blue colour — morning visits between 9 and 11 AM with the sun directly overhead produce the most vivid colour. June through September is the rainy season: the river itself does not flood (it is spring-fed), but road access from Surigao City can be difficult after heavy rain, and the overcast sky mutes the colour somewhat.
✈️ How to get to Hinatuan Enchanted River
Hinatuan is in Surigao del Sur, a province on the eastern coast of Mindanao. The nearest airport is Surigao (SUG) in Surigao City, about 3 hours north of Hinatuan. From Surigao City, take a bus to Tandag or beyond and alight at Hinatuan town (PHP 150–200, approximately 3 hours), then hire a tricycle to the river entrance (PHP 50–80, 10 minutes). A private van charter from Surigao City to Hinatuan runs PHP 2,500–4,000 return. From Davao City (DVO, 5+ hours away), take a bus to Tandag or direct to Hinatuan — factor in 5–6 hours and PHP 300–500 for bus fare. Entrance to the Enchanted River is PHP 100 per person.

Frequently asked questions — Hinatuan Enchanted River
Why is the Hinatuan Enchanted River that colour? Is it edited in photos?
The colour is real and the physics behind it are straightforward. The river is fed by a primary spring that descends to an estimated depth of 80 metres through fractured marine limestone. The water filling it is saltwater, connected underground to the sea. Saltwater with no suspended sediment, in sufficient depth, absorbs red-spectrum light and reflects blue-spectrum light back to the surface. At 80 metres, in completely clear saline water with zero turbidity, the blue reflection is so concentrated that the river appears to be lit from below.
What time should I arrive at the Enchanted River?
Arrive by 9 AM when swimming opens, swim until 11:30 AM, and position yourself on the bank or bridge before noon for the fish feeding. This is the non-negotiable planning principle for the Enchanted River. The feeding at noon is the day's centrepiece and you do not want to be in transit when it happens. On weekends and Philippine holidays, arrive even earlier — the swimming area fills quickly between 10 and 11 AM.
Is it safe to travel to Surigao del Sur?
Surigao del Sur, including Hinatuan, is considered safe for tourists and is a well-established domestic travel destination. The province is not under any travel advisory at the time of writing. Standard common-sense precautions apply as in any rural Philippine province: travel in daylight, use registered transport, and inform someone of your itinerary. Check current advisories before booking.
Can I dive into the main spring vent at the Enchanted River?
No — recreational diving into the primary spring vent is not permitted. The depth is extreme (estimated 80+ metres), the underwater cave system is unmapped, and the inflow and outflow currents in the channel are unpredictable. Swimming and snorkeling near the surface and in the mouth area are permitted during the 9 AM to noon window. The restriction is enforced by barangay staff.

First time in Hinatuan Enchanted River?
Quick essentials so you can hit the ground running.
Standard Philippines visa-free entry for most nationalities (30 days). No special permits are needed for Surigao del Sur or the Enchanted River.
Bring PHP cash from Surigao City before heading to Hinatuan — the town has a basic Rural Bank with limited ATM service but it is not reliably stocked. PHP 1,000–2,000 cash is sufficient for a day trip including entrance (PHP 100), transport, and meals. GCash is accepted at some restaurants in Tandag and Surigao City but not reliably in Hinatuan town.
Surigao del Sur coastal areas including Hinatuan are considered low malaria risk but consult current advisories and your travel doctor before visiting. Dengue is present — use DEET repellent. The river water is cold and entering suddenly can cause muscle cramps; ease in gradually and avoid jumping from height into unknown depths.
Day-trip budget from Surigao City: PHP 2,000–3,500 per person (van share PHP 500–800, entrance PHP 100, food PHP 400–600, extras). Multi-day Surigao del Sur trip with Britania and Tinuy-an: budget PHP 3,000–5,000 per day including accommodation (PHP 800–1,500), transport, and site fees.
Hinatuan town and the Enchanted River site are safe. The site has life jackets available for non-swimmers and is staffed during operating hours. Do not swim in the deep spring vent area or beyond the marked swimming zone. Road travel between Surigao City and Hinatuan passes through rural Mindanao — use registered bus or van services and travel in daylight.
