Donsol is a quiet fishing town in Sorsogon that happens to host the largest known congregation of whale sharks on the planet. Every season from November to June, butanding (the local name for whale sharks) gather in the warm Ticao Pass, and since 1998 the town has run one of the most ethically managed wildlife interaction programs in Southeast Asia. There is no feeding, no touching, no flash photography — just you, a snorkel, and a 12-metre fish.

Things to do in Donsol

Register at the Visitor Center

All whale shark swimmers must register here before heading to the boats — pay the PHP 300 interaction permit and get briefed on BIO rules. Opens at 7 AM.

Hire a boat for whale shark interaction

Fibreglass bancas fit up to 5 swimmers; shared hire runs PHP 1,500–2,000 per boat (not per person). Each boat is assigned a BIO (Butanding Interaction Officer) who spots sharks and enforces the no-touch, no-sunscreen rules.

Know what to wear

No chemical sunscreen — bring a rash guard or reef-safe mineral sunscreen only. Fins, mask, and snorkel are available for rent at the Visitor Center (PHP 150).

Join the firefly river cruise at twilight

Board a small banca on the Donsol River at dusk for a 90-minute glide past mangroves lit up by thousands of fireflies. Boats cost PHP 800–1,200 each, maximum 4–6 passengers. Book at the Visitor Center by 5 PM.

Swim at Rizal Beach

A long, calm swimming beach 3 km west of town with no entrance fee — a solid place to rest and rinse off between activities.

Base in Legazpi if budget is tight

Legazpi City (2 hours north) has far more accommodation options at every price point. Donsol itself has guesthouses at PHP 600–1,500 per night but they fill fast in peak season — book ahead.

Frequently asked questions — Donsol

Is seeing a whale shark guaranteed?

No. The official sighting rate is roughly 70–80% during peak season (January–April) and drops to 40–60% from November to December. If you miss on day one, a second-day ticket costs the same and your odds improve.

Can I touch or ride the whale sharks?

Strictly no. BIOs enforce a 3-metre distance rule at all times. Any guest who touches a whale shark is pulled from the water immediately with no refund. This rule has kept the sharks returning for 25+ years.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You swim alongside the shark at the surface using snorkel gear only — no scuba diving is permitted. Moderate swimming ability is enough. Life jackets are available on request.

Is the firefly tour worth it if I am only in Donsol for one night?

Yes. The firefly cruise runs regardless of whale shark conditions and takes about 90 minutes total. It is one of the best firefly experiences in the Philippines and a very different kind of spectacle.
