Clark, or Clark Freeport Zone (formerly Clark Air Base), is a former US military installation transformed into a sprawling duty-free economic zone 80km north of Manila. It's one of the more unusual destinations in the Philippines: a vast, tree-lined zone with international airport, casino resorts, championship golf, and the Philippines' most extensive collection of historic military aircraft — all built atop the foundations of Cold War-era American infrastructure. For travellers, Clark works beautifully as a one-to-two night base for Mount Pinatubo trekking, a gateway to Kapampangan food culture (Pampanga is the Philippines' culinary heartland), duty-free shopping, and for international arrivals via Clark International Airport who want to avoid Manila congestion entirely.
Things to do in Clark
Trek Mt. Pinatubo (day trip)
Clark is the closest major base for the famous Pinatubo crater lake trek. Tours depart from nearby Angeles City at 3-5am — easily arranged from Clark hotels. The complete day trip (4WD crossing + trek + crater swim + return) is done by 4-5pm.
Shop at Duty Free Philippines
Clark's duty-free zone offers alcohol, electronics, cosmetics, and fashion at meaningful discounts (tax-free for international arrivals). The Marquee Mall and various duty-free outlets are competitive on international brands. Even without duty-free privileges, retail is plentiful.
Visit the Clark Aviation Museum
One of Southeast Asia's notable aviation collections — a gallery of historic aircraft including WWII-era American fighters, Cold War-era Philippine Air Force jets, and Pacific campaign aircraft. Fascinating for history and aviation enthusiasts. PHP 100-150 entrance.
Eat Kapampangan food in Angeles
Pampanga province — immediately adjacent to Clark — is the Philippines' undisputed culinary capital. Birthplace of sisig (chopped pig's head, sizzling plate), kare-kare (oxtail in peanut sauce), and crispy pata (deep-fried pork hock). Angeles City's restaurant scene has dozens of excellent options. Aling Lucing's and similar old-guard spots are the pilgrimage destinations.
Golf at Mimosa Golf Course
The championship 18-hole Mimosa Golf Course inside Clark Freeport is set among former US military grounds and mature forest. Green fees are competitive by Manila standards (PHP 1,500-2,500 for visitors) and the course is consistently well-maintained.

Is Clark worth visiting in itself?
Clark is best as a 1-2 night strategic base: for Pinatubo, Kapampangan food, duty-free, and the aviation museum. It's not a primary tourism destination on its own but genuinely useful as a Manila alternative — many travellers prefer it as a rest stop before or after a Pinatubo trek.
How do I get from Clark to Manila?
Victory Liner or Genesis bus from the Clark terminal to Cubao (PHP 200-300, 2-2.5 hours). Grab also available for private car transfers. The NLEX expressway makes the journey fast in off-peak hours.
What are the best hotels?
Royce Hotel & Casino, Midpoint Hotel, and Quest Hotel are well-rated mid-to-upscale properties significantly cheaper than comparable Manila hotels (PHP 2,000-5,000/night). Many have pools and are within the secure freeport zone.
