Apo Island is a tiny volcanic island off the southeast tip of Negros, ringed by some of the healthiest hard-coral reefs in the Philippines and home to a famous resident population of wild green sea turtles that graze the seagrass in water shallow enough to float right over. In the mid-1980s the small fishing community set aside part of their own grounds as a no-take marine sanctuary; decades on, Apo is a global model for community-run protection and one of the best places to snorkel with turtles in the wild. For most visitors it is a 30-45 min boat day trip from Dumaguete or Dauin.

The shallow sanctuary where turtles feed unbothered - on a good day you share the water with several. A guided session is ~P300-500 pp plus the entrance fee. Keep your distance; never chase or touch.

🗓️ Best time to visit Apo Island
The dry season (roughly March to early June) brings the calmest seas, best visibility (often 20-30 m) and easiest crossings. The typhoon/rainier season (July to November) can mean rougher crossings and occasional boat cancellations, so build a buffer day. Go early in the day for calmer water and fewer crowds.
✈️ How to get to Apo Island
No airport - reach Apo only by boat, usually via Dumaguete (flights from Manila and Cebu). The common jump-off is Malatapay in Zamboanguita (~45-60 min south of Dumaguete; jeepney/bus under P100); some boats leave from Dauin. The banca crosses in ~30-45 min; a private round-trip is ~P3,000-5,000+ split among your group. Pay sanctuary fees (~P100-300) and a mandatory guide on arrival. An organized day tour bundles it all.

Are the sea turtles guaranteed?
No wild animal is ever guaranteed, but Apo has a healthy resident green-turtle population that feeds in the shallow seagrass almost daily, so sightings are very common - especially with a knowledgeable guide and on calm mornings.
Do I have to hire a guide?
Yes - the marine sanctuary requires a registered local guide for snorkeling, and the sanctuary fee is mandatory. This keeps swimmers safe, protects the turtles and coral, and channels income to the islanders.
Is Apo better as a day trip or an overnight?
A day trip is easiest and covers the highlights. An overnight gets you the reef and beaches before the day boats arrive and stargazing - just accept basic facilities (limited electricity, cold-water showers, no ATMs). Book ahead; beds are very limited.
Can beginners or non-swimmers visit?
Yes - weak swimmers can wear a life vest and float over the shallow turtle sanctuary with a guide, and dive shops offer supervised discover-scuba dives for the uncertified. Be honest with your guide about your comfort in water.
