Leyte is the island where General MacArthur landed in 1944, ending Japanese occupation. Tacloban City is the provincial capital and gateway. The MacArthur Landing Memorial at Palo is the main historical site. The province also has the Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park in neighbouring Samar and Kalanggaman Island off the north coast.

Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.
Best time to visit
March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
