Eastern Samar faces the Pacific Ocean and receives some of the strongest typhoon landfalls in the Philippines -- but between storms, its coastline has raw surf breaks, historic Guiuan and the Calicoan Island surf scene. Borongan City is the provincial capital. The Sierra Madre mountain range on the west shields Leyte from Pacific weather.

Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.
Best time to visit
March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
