Buscalan is a remote Kalinga mountain village famous as the home of Apo Whang-Od, the oldest and most revered mambabatok (traditional tattoo artist) in the Philippines. Getting a hand-tapped tattoo from her or her apprentices is a pilgrimage for many. The 45-minute hike from the jump-off in Tinglayan village is steep but rewarding.
Getting there
Bus from Manila (Victory Liner / Genesis) to Baguio, ~5-6 hrs. For Sagada, jeepney or van from Baguio.
Best time to visit
November to April — cool, dry weather perfect for trekking.
