Albay province in Bicol is dominated by the perfect cone of Mayon Volcano -- one of the most active and most photographed volcanoes in the world. Legazpi City is the provincial capital. The province is also known for intensely spicy Bicolano food (laing, bicol express) and the Cagsawa Ruins, partly buried by Mayon's 1814 eruption.

Fly MNL-LGP (Legazpi) or overnight bus/train from Manila.
Best time to visit
March to May — whale shark season; November to April for hiking.
