Is Davao safe to visit, and what's actually worth doing there?

Philippines travel Q&A
Friends warned me off Mindanao entirely but Davao keeps coming up as an exception.
Davao City is one of the safest, most orderly cities in the Philippines, very different from the conflict areas in western Mindanao that the travel warnings target. Don't smoke outside designated areas (there's a strict city smoking ban with real fines) and you'll be fine. Must-dos: the Philippine Eagle Center (~PHP 150 + small env fee), Eden Nature Park, durian at Magsaysay Park in season (Aug-Oct), and a day trip to Samal Island beaches via the short Sasa ferry.
Travelled solo there and felt completely comfortable. Some governments still have blanket Mindanao advisories, so do check your /visa-checker and your travel-insurance fine print, since a region-wide warning can affect coverage. That said, Davao itself is modern, clean and friendly. The seafood at Roxas night market and a Mount Apo viewpoint trip made it for me.
