Can tourists actually use GCash, or is it locals-only?

Everyone says download GCash but I've heard you need a Philippine bank or ID.

Realistically most tourists can't fully verify GCash - it needs a local number, and standard passport verification is toggled on and off. The workaround: when a vendor shows a GCash QR, just hand them cash, or use a Wise/Maya card. Plenty of Siargao and Cebu small sellers only take GCash QR now, so always keep cash backup.

Don't bank on GCash actually verifying - the 'GTourist' tier currently only accepts US (+1) numbers, so most of us get stuck. Wise card plus cash covered about 95% of my trip, so I stopped stressing about it.
