How this itinerary was built
We read the duration of all 27 bookable Panglao trips. Every one is a full day - 27 out of 27, a uniformity matched only by Puerto Princesa in our whole inventory.
That is the planning constraint. Three nights on Panglao is an arrival evening, two full days, and a departure morning. Anyone promising you a morning dive and an afternoon at the Chocolate Hills is describing something the inventory does not sell.
Three nights: sea and interior
Day 1 - arrive. The airport is on Panglao itself, 20-30 minutes from Alona Beach, so arrival is easier here than almost anywhere. Swim, eat on the beach, book the next two days.
Day 2 - Balicasag. The standard sea day: dolphin watching at dawn, then snorkelling at Balicasag island where the wall drops off and the turtles are reliable. Boats leave early - around 06:00 - which is the price of the dolphins.
Day 3 - the countryside. Chocolate Hills, the tarsier sanctuary and the Loboc river cruise in one loop, roughly two hours from Panglao. The countryside tour is the best-value product in Bohol: the eight-hour version runs about PHP 1,200.
Go to the proper sanctuary for the tarsiers, not the roadside operations that let you handle them. They are stress-sensitive nocturnal animals and handling is genuinely harmful.
Five nights: dive, and go east
Days 4-5. Panglao is a dive base and the wall at Balicasag rewards more than one visit. Discover scuba runs around PHP 1,850 for beginners; certified divers will want two or three days.
Anda on Bohol's east coast is the alternative: quieter beaches, cave pools, and almost none of Alona's crowds. It is a two-hour drive and a genuinely different Bohol.
Seven nights: pair it with Cebu
Days 6-7. Seven nights is more than Panglao needs. The fast ferry to Cebu is about two hours at PHP 250-450 - the cheapest crossing we index - which makes the two islands one trip rather than two.
Alternatively use the time slowly: Bohol is a place where doing very little on a beach is a legitimate plan, and Alona has the restaurants to support it.
Why Bohol is the cheapest major destination
Bohol's median tour is PHP 2,117, below Boracay, El Nido, Coron and Cebu City. The Chocolate Hills and tarsier day at around PHP 1,200 for eight hours is the clearest example of what that buys.
The reason is that the headline sights are inland and reached by road rather than by boat. Boats are what make Palawan expensive; Bohol's best day is a van.
Panglao and Bohol are not the same place
Panglao is a small island joined to Bohol by bridges. It has the beaches, the dive shops and nearly all the resorts. The Chocolate Hills, the tarsiers and the river are on Bohol proper, about two hours away.
That distance is why the whole inventory is full-day products, and why a two-night trip forces a choice between the sea and the interior - a choice most people regret making.
What most guides get wrong about a Panglao itinerary
The first error is stacking two activities in a day. All 27 products are full days; it cannot be done.
The second is treating the Chocolate Hills as a quick morning trip from Alona. Two hours each way makes it a day.
The third is recommending the roadside tarsier stops for photographs. Use the sanctuary.
Alona Beach and the quieter alternatives
Alona is the centre of everything: dive shops, restaurants, bars and most of the accommodation along a short strip of sand. It is busy and convenient in equal measure.
Doljo and Momo beaches on the same island are a few minutes away and far quieter, with less to walk to. Anda, two hours east on Bohol proper, is the real escape.
Diving Balicasag, and the visitor cap
Balicasag is a marine sanctuary and access is limited - a daily cap on visitor numbers, with divers and snorkellers counted separately. Boats leave early partly because of it.
The wall drops steeply and the turtles are habituated rather than fed, which makes encounters reliable without the feeding controversy that surrounds Oslob. It is the best diving in central Visayas outside Moalboal.
Getting between Panglao and the interior
The countryside loop is a booked van day for good reason: the Chocolate Hills, the tarsier sanctuary and Loboc are spread across Bohol proper, two hours from Alona and some distance from each other.
Renting a scooter to do it independently is possible and it is a long ride in the heat. Most people who try it wish they had taken the van, which is why every product in our Panglao inventory is a full-day format.
The tarsiers, and why the sanctuary matters
Philippine tarsiers are tiny nocturnal primates with enormous fixed eyes - they cannot move them, so they rotate their heads instead. They are stress-sensitive to a degree that is genuinely dangerous: distressed animals have been known to injure themselves.
The conservation sanctuary keeps visitors quiet, bans flash and does not permit handling. Roadside operations that let you hold one for a photograph are not the same thing, and the difference is the animal's survival rather than a preference.
Getting to Panglao
Bohol-Panglao International (TAG) is on Panglao itself, 20 to 30 minutes from Alona Beach - unusually convenient for a Philippine beach destination.
The alternative is flying to Cebu and taking the fast ferry to Tagbilaran, about two hours at PHP 250 to 450. That is often easier despite the extra leg, because Cebu has far more inbound connections than Panglao does.
