How this itinerary was built
We read all 53 bookable Manila trips. The price spread is the widest of any city we index: PHP 300 at the floor, PHP 16,059 at the top, with 29 products bunched at exactly PHP 1,850.
That bunching is packaging rather than value. A PHP 500 Intramuros walking tour and a PHP 1,850 "Viva Old Manila! Intramuros Walking Tour" cover the same ground; the price difference is transport and a guide, not access. Manila is the one destination where reading the cheap end of the list carefully saves the most money.
Three days: two in the city, one out
Day 1 - Intramuros. The walled city is the reason to be here. A heritage walking tour is PHP 500, or PHP 300 for the budget version - the cheapest guided product in our entire Philippine inventory. Fort Santiago and San Agustin church fill a morning; the afternoon is for Rizal Park next door.
Day 2 - food and the bay. The Manila food tour is PHP 800 for five hours and goes through Binondo, the oldest Chinatown in the world. End with the bay sunset cruise at PHP 400 for two hours - the second-cheapest thing we index here.
Day 3 - get out. Tagaytay with the Taal volcano view is PHP 1,500 for eight hours. Taal is an active volcano monitored by PHIVOLCS and the view from the ridge is the best day trip from the capital.
Five days: Pinatubo and the rest
Day 4 - Mount Pinatubo. The 1991 eruption was one of the twentieth century's largest and the crater lake is now a 4x4-and-trek day trip from Manila. It is a long day and worth it.
Day 5 - museums and BGC. The Mind Museum in BGC is PHP 565 and Manila Ocean Park PHP 730 - both genuinely cheap and both good rainy-day answers. BGC itself is the modern counterpoint to Intramuros.
Seven days: Manila is a base, not a destination
Beyond five days the honest advice is to stop treating Manila as the destination. Hidden Valley, Villa Escudero and the Enchanting Hidden Valley day trips all appear in our inventory at PHP 1,850 and up, and they are pleasant rather than essential.
Seven days in Luzon is a better trip than seven days in Manila: Pampanga for food is ninety minutes north, Baler for surf is on the Pacific coast, and Banaue's terraces are further still. Use the city's airport and move.
The nightlife tier
Manila has a real bar scene and our inventory reflects it: a bar crawl at PHP 1,511 and rooftop tours in the same band. Makati and BGC are where these run.
Worth knowing: these are the products where the PHP 1,850 packaging is most justified, because a guided crawl solves the transport problem in a city where getting between three venues is the hard part.
What most guides get wrong about a Manila itinerary
The first error is stretching Manila to five or seven days because it is the capital. Two days covers its sights honestly; the rest of the time belongs to Luzon.
The second is quoting Manila as expensive. Its entry price of PHP 300 is the lowest we index anywhere in the country - lower than Boracay's PHP 185 only in the sense that Boracay's is a fire show rather than a tour.
The third is booking the packaged PHP 1,850 Intramuros tours without noticing the PHP 500 version covers the same walls.
Where to sleep in Manila
Makati and BGC are the comfortable bases with the restaurants and the malls. Malate is cheaper and closer to Intramuros. Airport-area hotels exist purely for early departures and are worth it for a flight before 09:00.
Intramuros itself has a small number of places inside the walls, which is a genuinely different experience - the walled city empties out in the evening once the day visitors leave.
Moving around the city
Ride-hailing is the practical default and works from everywhere. The MRT and LRT exist and are cheap, but they are crowded and do not serve the routes most visitors want.
Traffic is the defining constraint: the same journey can take twenty minutes or an hour depending on the time of day. Plan two things per day in one district rather than three across the city, and Manila becomes a much better place to be.
Jeepneys, and whether to bother
The jeepney is the Philippine icon - a stretched jeep with bench seating, a fixed route painted on the side, and fares passed hand to hand up the aisle. Rides cost a handful of pesos.
They are genuinely useful only if you know the routes, which are not mapped in any obvious way. Ride one for the experience on a short hop; do not plan your day around them.
Binondo, the oldest Chinatown in the world
Binondo was established in 1594 for Catholic Chinese immigrants and is generally recognised as the oldest Chinatown anywhere. It is still a working commercial district rather than a preserved quarter.
The PHP 800 five-hour food tour goes through it, and that is the best way to eat here - the good places are unmarked, crowded and not obviously distinguishable from the mediocre ones to an outsider.
The eTravel registration
The Philippines requires an online arrival registration completed shortly before you land, producing a QR code checked at immigration. It is free, takes a few minutes, and applies regardless of nationality or visa status.
Do it before boarding rather than in the immigration hall on airport wifi. It is the commonest avoidable delay for first-time arrivals into Manila.
