How this itinerary was built
We read all the bookable Makati trips we index. The categories tell the story: street food tours, after-dark bar and cocktail crawls, rooftop city views. There is almost nothing here in the sightseeing category, because Makati's own sights are few.

Two nights: the honest version
Evening 1 - eat. The Makati street food tour is the reason to be here. Poblacion is the dense, walkable, slightly chaotic bar and restaurant district and it has become the best eating neighbourhood in Metro Manila.
A guided crawl solves the real problem in a city where getting between three venues is harder than finding them. Rooftop tours in the same price band trade food for a view.
Day 2 - Intramuros. Half an hour away, and the actual reason to spend a day in Manila. A walking tour is PHP 500 or PHP 300 for the budget version - the cheapest guided product in our entire inventory. Fort Santiago and San Agustin fill a morning.
End at the bay for the sunset cruise at PHP 400, two hours, the second-cheapest thing we index in Manila.
Three days: get out of the city
Day 3. Tagaytay with the Taal volcano view is PHP 1,500 for eight hours - an active volcano in a lake on an island in a lake, and the best day trip from the capital. Mount Pinatubo's crater lake is the other option and a longer day.
Both leave early. Both are better uses of a third day than looking for more to do inside Makati.
Five days: a Luzon base
Beyond three days, Makati earns its place as a comfortable base with an airport nearby rather than as somewhere you are visiting. Pampanga's food scene is ninety minutes north, Baler's surf is on the Pacific coast, Banaue's terraces further still.
The honest read: five days based in Makati means four day trips and a lot of expressway. Two or three nights here and then moving is a better trip.
Makati, BGC and Poblacion
Three names that get used interchangeably and should not be. Makati proper is the older business district with Ayala Avenue and the malls. Poblacion is the nightlife quarter inside it. BGC - Bonifacio Global City - is a separate newer district in Taguig, cleaner, more walkable and blander.
Stay in Makati or Poblacion for food and bars; BGC for museums like the Mind Museum at PHP 565 and a quieter, more corporate feel.
Getting around, and the traffic reality
Makati to Intramuros is short in distance and unpredictable in time. Ride-hailing works well; the MRT and buses exist but are not a pleasant introduction to the city.
Budget generously in either direction during peak hours - the same trip can take twenty minutes or an hour. This single fact shapes every Manila itinerary more than any attraction does.
What most guides get wrong about a Makati itinerary
The first error is treating Makati as a sightseeing destination. Its bookable inventory is food and nightlife; the history is in Intramuros.
The second is stretching Manila to five or seven days. Two days covers the sights honestly.
The third is booking PHP 1,850 packaged Intramuros tours without noticing the PHP 500 and PHP 300 versions cover the same walls.
Eating in Poblacion
Poblacion is the densest good eating in Metro Manila: Filipino, Japanese, Korean and modern places within a few walkable blocks, plus the bars that made the district.
It is genuinely walkable, which almost nothing else in Manila is. That is why the guided crawls in our inventory are priced as experiences rather than transport - here, for once, you are paying for the picks rather than the van.
Makati proper, Poblacion or BGC
Makati proper around Ayala Avenue is business-district convenient with the malls attached. Poblacion is louder, cheaper and closer to the food. BGC in Taguig is cleaner and quieter with the museums.
All three are reasonable bases for a Manila stopover. Choose on whether you want nightlife downstairs or a quiet street.
Arriving and leaving
NAIA is close to Makati in distance and unpredictable in time - the same trip can take twenty minutes or an hour depending on the hour. Allow generously in both directions, and remember the four terminals are separate buildings with no airside connection.
For a flight before about 09:00, an airport-area hotel removes the only genuinely risky part of a Manila departure.
What Makati is actually for
Makati is the financial district: office towers, malls, and the country's densest concentration of good restaurants. It is not historic and does not pretend to be.
What that gives a visitor is a comfortable, safe, well-connected base with an airport twenty minutes away and everything open late. For a stopover between islands - which is what most Manila visits are - that is exactly the right thing to want.
The malls, which are a genuine local institution
Greenbelt, Glorietta and the SM complexes are not just shopping: they are air-conditioned public space where people eat, meet and spend weekends, because the street heat and the traffic make outdoor life harder here than in a smaller city.
Understanding that makes Manila make more sense. The malls are where the city socialises, and dismissing them as generic misses what they do.
