El Nido Travel Guide: Why Four Lettered Tours Is a Worse Week Than Two

That distribution is the finding this guide is built on. Almost everything here is a boat day in one bay, so the planning question is not which tour is best but how many boat days a week can absorb before they blur together.

The lettered tours are routes, not tiers

Tour A, B, C and D are four circuits around Bacuit Bay. They are not ordered by quality, and our price index shows them clustering at the same PHP 1,850 rate regardless of letter.

Tour A carries the Big and Small Lagoon, which is why it is the one every itinerary names and the one that fills first. Tour B is generally quieter and has the shortest variants in our inventory, at six and seven hours. What separates your day is which lagoons a route reaches and how many boats stack up at each stop, not the letter.

Two boat days is the number

Four consecutive boat days in the same bay produces diminishing returns fast. Same boat type, same lunch on a beach, similar limestone.

A better week: one lettered tour early in your stay, a land day to Nacpan and Duli, a kayak day in the Big Lagoon under your own power, and one more lettered tour. You see more variety, you spend less, and you get a break from six hours on a bench.

The kayak option deserves particular attention. It is one of only two sub-full-day products in our whole El Nido inventory, and paddling into the Big Lagoon rather than arriving with twenty other boats is a different experience of the same place.

Timing the Big Lagoon

The single biggest variable in an El Nido day is arrival order at Big Lagoon. The premium tier in our index exists largely to buy an earlier departure, because the lagoon photograph everyone comes for is either empty water or a queue depending on when you arrive.

If that photograph matters, pay for the early departure or take the kayak. If it does not, the standard shared boat visits identical water and you can spend the difference on another day out.

Getting there, and the Coron question

El Nido is reached by air into its small airport, or overland from Puerto Princesa - roughly five to six hours by road. Our Puerto Princesa index makes the practical point: doing the Underground River and transferring north on the same day is a punishing plan that nonetheless appears in published itineraries.

For Coron, the expedition boats in our inventory - two to three days with beach camping - replace both a ferry ticket and two or three nights of accommodation. Compared like that, they price very differently from a day tour.

What the six non-boat products tell you

Six of the 53 trips are not standard full-day boat tours, and they are the ones that make a week work: a six-hour kayak trip, a seven-hour Tour B variant, a cacao tasting, and three multi-day expeditions.

That thinness is worth naming plainly. El Nido has very little to book that is not a boat, so if the weather turns or you simply want a slower day, the inventory will not offer you much. Plan the rest day as a rest day rather than assuming you can fill it with an alternative activity booked that morning.

Where to stay, and why it changes the day

El Nido town puts you closest to the tour jetty and the restaurants, which matters when boats leave early and you are eating after dark. Corong-Corong, a few minutes south, is quieter and has the sunsets. Nacpan and the northern beaches are beautiful and a genuine trip from the jetty - lovely for the end of a stay, awkward as a base for consecutive boat days.

We hold no accommodation inventory in El Nido, so this is not a recommendation of properties. It is about proximity to the jetty, which is the thing that determines how early you have to get up on a boat day.

What most guides get wrong about El Nido

The most common error is presenting A, B, C and D as a checklist to complete. Four boat days in one bay is a worse week than two boat days and two different ones, and nothing about the lettering implies you should do them all.

The second is the claim that El Nido is expensive and Coron is the budget option. Our own indexes say the opposite on tours: El Nido's median is PHP 2,500 against Coron's PHP 3,500, and both share an identical PHP 1,850 standard day. El Nido is dearer for rooms and food in season, not for boats.

Third, the Bacuit Bay environmental fee is collected separately and locally, so any all-in figure quoted online is usually missing it.

Which El Nido tour is best, A or C?

Is El Nido or Coron better?

El Nido has more bookable variety (53 trips against 41) and a lower tour median. Coron has the wrecks. Many travellers do both via a multi-day expedition boat.

Do I need to book island hopping in advance?

Not usually - the standard PHP 1,850 tour is widely available. Early premium departures and private boats are what sell out in peak season.

How do I get from Puerto Princesa to El Nido?

Five to six hours by road. Do not attempt it on the same day as an Underground River tour.
