How this itinerary was built
We read the bookable Davao trips we index. The inventory is small compared with Cebu or Palawan and it splits cleanly: city and nature products around Davao itself, island products on Samal, and the Mount Apo trek in a category of its own.
That small inventory is itself informative. Davao is a large, prosperous city that is not primarily a tourist destination, which is why it feels different from Cebu - fewer touts, fewer tours, more ordinary city.
Three days: city and island
Day 1 - the city. The Philippine Eagle Centre is the one genuinely unmissable thing here: the Philippine eagle is critically endangered, one of the largest eagles in the world, and this conservation centre is where you can reliably see one.
Then the markets. Davao is the durian capital and the fruit is sold everywhere in season - pungent, banned from most hotels, and worth trying once. Pomelo and mangosteen are the gentler local specialities.
Day 2 - Samal Island. Ferries cross in about fifteen minutes from Davao. The island has white sand beaches, resorts and the Monfort bat cave, which holds one of the largest colonies of fruit bats in the world.
Day 3 - Eden or the coast. Eden Nature Park is a mountain resort above the city with cooler air, ziplines and gardens. It is a straightforward, pleasant day and a contrast to the heat below.
Five days: slower and further
Days 4-5. With more time, stay on Samal rather than day-tripping. The island has quiet resorts and the pace changes entirely once the last ferry has gone.
The Davao coast toward Mati and Dahican has surf and long empty beaches, though that is a real drive and closer to a separate trip than a day out.
Seven days: Mount Apo
Mount Apo is 2,954 metres, the highest point in the Philippines, and climbing it is a two-to-four-day expedition depending on the route. It requires permits, a registered guide and reasonable fitness - it is a proper mountain, not a hill walk.
Routes start from Kidapawan, Digos or Kapatagan, and conditions can turn quickly at altitude. Arrange it through a licensed operator well before you arrive; the permit process is not something to start on the day.
If you have a week in Davao, this is what it is for. If you do not intend to trek, five days is plenty.
Is Davao safe

For a three-day trip, downtown works: it is close to the eagle centre road, the markets, and the ferry crossing. If your plan is mostly Samal, staying on the island itself is calmer.
The markets, and what to look for
Bankerohan is the main public market and the best place to see what Davao actually grows: durian in season, pomelo, mangosteen, marang, and the cacao that has made Davao the centre of Philippine chocolate.
Single-origin Davao chocolate is a genuine local product rather than a souvenir invention, and the better bars are worth the space in your bag.
When to come
Davao sits outside the main typhoon belt, which is unusual for the Philippines and makes it more weather-reliable than most of the country year-round.
Durian season peaks around August to October, and the Kadayawan festival in August celebrates the harvest with street dancing and floral floats - the busiest and most interesting week to be in the city.

The Philippine eagle is critically endangered with a wild population in the low hundreds, and it is one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world - a forest raptor that hunts monkeys and flying lemurs.
The centre outside Davao runs a captive breeding programme and is the only reliable place to see one. It is a conservation facility rather than a zoo, and the birds are there because they cannot be released.
Samal Island in practice
Ferries cross to Samal in about fifteen minutes and run frequently through the day, so it works as a day trip or as a base.
